11 Reasons Why You're Not Losing Fat

Belly fat is bad... bad looking and bad for you. Getting rid of it is important not just for your vanity, but also for your overall health and well being. Belly fat is a fairly reliable predictor of heart disease; type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance and even a few cancers. Hard work might not be enough to be rid of this unsightly problem; genetic factors beyond your control or something simple like missing out on sleep could be to blame. Assuming diet and exercise have not done enough, there may be other reasons why you're struggling that have nothing to do with work ethic or effort.

Here are 11 factors that might be making it harder to get rid of belly fat.

1. Age: As we get older, our body gains and loses weight in a different way. Both women and men have a declining metabolic rate, and women have menopause to deal with, where if weight is gained, it tends to be in the belly area. It's the hormone shift that causes a woman to hold weight here.

2. No strength training: Cardio exercise won't do much for your weight, you need both cardio and weights to get a benefit to the belly area. Strength training ups muscle mass and this has you burning more fat, it's a natural way to fuel weight loss in the body. Go for 250 minutes of moderate, 120 of high intensity exercise each week.

3. Eating too many processed foods
: Refined grains and sugars raise levels of inflammation in the body, and belly fat is linked to this type of inflammation. Eating too many processed foods will stand in the way of your body's natural ability to drop fat. Fruits, veggies and whole grains are loaded with antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory properties, and may even help prevent belly fat from accumulating in the first place.

4. Eating the wrong fats
: Saturated fat has been linked to more visceral fat, while monounsaturated fats and some types of polyunsaturated fats do have anti-inflammatory affects on the body. If you eat them in the right potions you can really do yourself some good, though keep in mind that eating too much of any kind of fat ups your calorie intake, so enjoy healthy fats in moderation.

5. Doing a workout that's too easy: To burn belly fat, you really need to do vigorous workouts. Research has found that high intensity workouts help lose more belly fat than low intensity plans. Burning more calories is key in your fight against belly fat, and highly intense exercise does that for you. This means going all out for as long as you can.

6. Trying to spot reduce: Despite what you've heard, this just won't work. Instead you'll need to focus on functional exercise that use all the muscles in your core... the abdominals, pelvic, back, obliques and other body parts. These exercise use more muscles so you burn more calories doing them. Planks are a great functional workout, as they use your core, arm, leg and butt muscles.

7. Stress: Having too much stress in your life, no matter the source, can make it harder than it should be to lose weight, especially in the belly area. This isn't just because of what you tend to eat when you're stressed; it's also because the hormone cortisol causes your body to hold onto more fat. Higher levels of cortisol have been associated with more visceral fat.

8. Not enough sleep: If you sleep less than 6 hours a night (30% of us do) you need to get more rest in order to give your waistline the best chance of shrinking. Research finds that those who get under five hours of sleep a night are far more likely to gain weight than those who slept seven hours per night.

9. An apple shape: If you have always added pounds around the middle instead of on hips or thighs, you have the apple shape body type. Because of this genetically determined shape, losing belly fat will be tougher.

10. Illness: If you have conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) you may also have trouble losing weight, and this includes belly fat. You could also be in the early stages of diabetes if you are making genuine efforts to lose and nothing is happening.

11. It's hard: Cutting belly fat takes work... real sustained time and effort. It won't just happen because you want it to. Losing belly fat comes down to eating a low calorie diet that's high in fiber, low in carbs and sugar along with regular exercise that includes both cardio and strength training.
