Study: Coffee Might Keep Retinal Damage At Bay
Dear Reader,
Your morning cup of coffee is doing more than just getting your day started... it might also be protecting one of your most vital senses... your sight. It's true, food experts have come to believe that coffee drinkers get an unexpected benefit from their favorite beverage - prevention of deteriorating eyesight or blindness that comes from the degeneration of the retina due to glaucoma, diabetes or simple aging.
The retina is essential in terms of your sight; a thin layer of tissue on
the inside back wall of the eye. It has millions of light sensitive cells along with other nerve cells that receive and help organize visual data. This area is also one of the most metabolically active tissues, calling for lots of oxygen, making it prone to oxidative stress. A lack of oxygen and the natural production of free radicals is what brings on tissue damage and results in eventual loss of sight.
Because coffee is such a popular drink the world over - the coffee market was valued
at $130 billion in the U.S. in 2013 - researchers are anxious to see what natural benefits it may bring. Turns out that raw coffee is on average just 1% caffeine, and has from 7% to 8% of chlorogenic acid (CLA) an antioxidant that prevents the degeneration of the retina in mice. This comes from a study out of Cornell that appeared in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry in December 2013.
For the most recent research, funded by the Korean Institute of Science and Technology,
nitric oxide was applied to the mice eyes of subjects in the lab in order to create oxidative stress and free radicals. Mice pretreated with CLA showed no damage to the retina, and help make the case for functional foods. These are natural foods that offer beneficial effects to the body.

Study: Coffee Might Keep Retinal Damage At Bay Continued...
CLA and its metabolites are known to be absorbed by the digestive system. The next step in the work on coffee and the retina will be to see if the CLA crosses a membrane known as the blood/retinal barrier. If drinking coffee delivers CLA right to the retina, we may soon have healthcare pros suggesting that patients drink a particular brew to protect their retinas from damage. Synthetic compounds might also be made, delivered to the eye via drops.
Earlier work on coffee has shown that
this popular beverage cuts the risk of diseases like Parkinson's, prostate cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's and the cognitive decline that comes with aging.
And while we're talking about the plus side of caffeine, let's bust a lingering myth about coffee. You've heard that coffee dehydrates you, but it turns out that this "fact" is a persistently repeated urban legend based on early (1928) studies that suggested giving people caffeine in pill form increased urine output.
Turns out
the amount of caffeine intake we're talking about here is high, 500 mg or 3.5 coffee/10 cups of tea all at once, and the effect seems to be most pronounced in those who don't drink coffee on a regular basis. Think about it, if drinking coffee was so dehydrating, wouldn't a lot more people be hospitalized for dehydration, a life threatening condition?
To your good health,
