How Fasting Harms Your Body
Dear Reader,
All of us skip a meal once in a while... get a late start or work through lunch. That's not what we mean by "fasting". Not eating for several days is what we're talking about here, a practice that some use to lose weight, while other might try it as a way to detox or as part of religious observance. Trouble is, just a few days of fasting can trigger
a natural breakdown of skeletal muscle. That's not good news for anyone, including an older or sick adult who is already fighting a hard battle.
Experts want you to be aware that even if you're young, and consider yourself healthy, going without food for any length of time can lead to the same kind of fragility and weakness doctors find in older adults, or those who are unwell, fighting disease. There is plenty of current research that finds missing meals speeds up muscle loss and weakness for the sick and elderly, two populations who already have a hard time holding onto skeletal muscle. Now we see more evidence that this practice
may not be good for your body at all.
A team out of Aarhus University Hospital looked at the muscles of eight healthy male subjects both before and after a 3 day fast. After not eating for three days the men saw a 50%
reduction in mTOR action. This is an important regulator of the growth of muscle
cells. So when mTOR drops, muscle wasting speeds up. Strangely enough, there's evidence from mice trials that blocking the activity of mTOR triggers a cell survival response that extends life.
Your muscles are what make you strong, help you hold up your head and move, but if you have an illness or are aging naturally, losing muscle is a daily struggle. Skipping meals can actually speed up muscle
loss, and though it might bring some benefits to a healthy adult, it's too early to tell people there are any health benefits from the practice.
There are still many, many unanswered questions.
What we do know is that breakfast is the meal you should never skip. In a study those who skipped this meal were 4.5 times more apt to be considered obese. Breakfast skippers have also been shown to have a higher risk
of heart disease, type 2 diabetes. The fact is, when you don't eat regularly your metabolism
slows to help you conserve energy - which means you are not burning as many calories as you think you are.

How Fasting Harms Your Body Continued...
Experts warn that you should not fast, even for short periods, if you have diabetes, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have a chronic disease, are elderly or a child. Also, when it comes to detoxing, it's important to understand that there's no proof fasting works. Your body does this naturally through digestion, no fasting required.
It's conceivable that for a healthy, robust adult, a fast of short duration may do some good. Science hasn't figured out how slowing signally
that leads to the growth of cells might help you live longer, but there's some evidence (from the UK0 that shows temporary fasting might help people live longer.
If you do decide to fast, pay special attention to your fluid intake - don't deny yourself liquids as well. Drink enough to be properly hydrated. You might also want to talk over your plans with your doctor or a registered dietitian to be sure that a multi day fast is a safe option for you.
