Vitamin D And Healthy Brain

Dear Reader,

There are many risks for cognitive impairment... old age, smoking, lack of exercise, a diet with lots of saturated fats, or one low in fish and fresh veggies; even being obese can cause problems in terms of how your brain works, how you think and remember. Unhealthy lifestyles (eating poorly, not exercising, smoking, excess alcohol) are also known to increase the chances you'll be diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure or diabetes... all troublesome enough on their own, even worse when combined with thinking difficulties. This is the reason your healthcare team (and researchers) always harp on living healthy - these pros know how quickly, and mercilessly disease can take hold.

If lifer altering disease isn't enough, there's another consequence to keeping up with your poor food choices. When people eat a diet that has lots of fat and protein, they make their own digestive tract more acidic, and this aids the absorption of both aluminum and heavy metals. Such toxins are the likely candidates for generating dangerous free radicals that move all through the body, attacking neurons and hindering the functioning of the brain as they do.

While medical science has long been aware of vitamin D's role in bone health, and it's ability to fight off troublesome conditions like cardiovascular diseases, cancer, stroke and diabetes, experts today add cognitive impairment and dementia to that list. Research has shown the positive relationship between vitamin D and brain function, and we know there are many vitamin D receptors naturally a part of brain tissue. Experts have found that lower levels of vitamin D in the blood are tied to an increased risk of cognitive impairment, a fact that's been reaffirmed by many studies on different populations and in different parts of the world.

There are several ways researchers theorize that vitamin D may protect the brain...

Vitamin D And Healthy Brain Continued...

- Cuts the risk of diseases that affect the brain (hypertension and cardiovascular disease)

- Offers antioxidative mechanisms to fight free radical damage

- Regulates levels of calcium, the immune system

- Enhances nerve conduction, signaling

- Assists in ridding the body of toxins

Whatever the reason, it's a smart strategy to know where you stand in terms of this important nutrient. Talk with your own healthcare team about blood testing to see where your vitamin D levels are now. A level over 40 ng/mL is thought to cut the risk of cognitive impairment, but to get to this; most of us need vitamin D supplements (1000-5000 IUs) daily. Be sure you know you level before you start taking any supplements or getting more time in the sun. It's also a good practice to have your vitamin D levels measured again, several months into your supplementing program, to see where you stand.

Sadly, when cognitive impairment strikes, there are no known treatments using vitamin D or any other FDA approved drug. There are no tests or procedures that can conclusively demonstrate that a patient has cognitive impairment, or what the underlying cause might be. This is an active area of study, and a provider may prescribe other medications, often used to treat Alzheimer's disease, in an effort to improve a patient's quality of life. There are some trials using vitamin D being organized, so if you're interested, investigate these.
