49 Ways To Live Longer To 100: Part 3
Dear Reader,
In the final part of our series on reaching that milestone 100th birthday, we're bringing you a final installment of healthy aging tips to help your body stay strong and healthier over the years. Some seem contradictory to be sure, but they all share a connection to longer life. And the good news? There's something here everyone can do, today, to feel better.
1. Live
on a hill. It sounds silly, but get this, 7 out of 10 of the longest living places in the U.S. are mountain based. In the tiny Sardinian mountain town of Ovodda, men and women both live to be 100. Is it the fresh, unpolluted air? The walking uphill or living at a higher elevation that extends you life? No one knows.
2. No more fatty snacks. Do you realize that a 100 g fistful of peanuts has 622 calories, which would take an hour of swimming to burn off? Make your snack crunchy, and filling up on choices like celery, carrots, peppers when possible.
3. Get along with your parents. Researchers have found that close relationships with parents and other family not only foster healing, they may offer some protection against serious illness. Subjects who weren't particularly close to parents had a higher risk of higher blood pressure, alcoholism or heart disease later in life.
4. Express your anger because over time, suppressed anger can bring on high blood pressure, insomnia, heart issues and even up your risk of cancer. Suppressing anger has been shown to make it more likely you'll die early.
5. Stay in bed on winter Mondays. Get this, research shows you're 18% more likely to die on a Monday than a Sunday, and 25% more likely to die during the winter than in the summer.
6. Sleep in separate beds as sharing a bed disrupts your sleep and ends up affecting your health. When one partner moves during sleep, there's a 50% chance the other will end up changing position too, disrupting their sleep without them even realizing.
7. Play golf. A large study of Swedish subjects found that playing golf upped the life span by an average of 5 years. Think about it, golf is being outside, walking at a good clip for a significant distance... so it makes sense that doing this would be beneficial to the body. There are also positive psychological and social aspects to the game.
8. Practice yoga because if we don't stretch the tendons and muscles they naturally get shorter, and this ultimately hampers our range of motion and puts stress on the joints.
9. Chew 20 times before swallowing. Not only is it a well-worn weight loss tip, but studies suggest that not chewing properly can double the risk of type 2 diabetes, in part because we eat more, but also because the act of chewing helps to break down foods so that your body can more easily absorb the nutrients.

10. Have a gossip session. A good talk with friends boosts levels of progesterone, a hormone that brings down anxiety and stress. After just 20 minutes, gossiping girls had more progesterone than those who didn't gossip.
11. Start wiggling, as studies show that even the littlest movement, fidgeting for instance, is enough to trigger the release of a chemical called BDNF that acts like a sort of "Miracle Grow" to the brain. It reverses cell deterioration that comes with aging. Try doing something every hour and see how you feel.
12. Use less salt from the shaker. Each shake gives you half a gram of salt, and cutting just one shake a day means a drop of 3 ½ grams a week. Most of us take in 9g of salt/day, 3g more than we should, so this small change could be enough to get you back into the recommended intake range. This also cuts your stroke risk by 13%, your risk of heart disease by 10%.
13. Have kids as a recent study found that men unable to conceive were two times as likely to die early from circulatory diseases, cancers and even accidents, Childless women bore four times the risk. By the way, adoption reduced the risk.
14. No late night TV as after the age of 25 every hour of TV you watch could take 22 minutes from your lifespan. It doesn't matter if you exercise, the problem is long bouts of inactivity that the body hates. Muscles aren't used. Sugars and fats aren't processed. This isn't good for the body.
15. Laugh as this might just bring up levels of infection fighting antibodies and strengthen immune cells. A good belly laugh improves blood flow by over 20% and there's research that suggests it can cut the risk of heart disease.
To your good health,
