Raises Of Cancer Risk With High Protein Diet
Dear Reader,
Important news on diet and preventing cancer. New research finds that those who eat a high protein diet at midlife are more likely to die from cancer than those eating less protein. But for those over 65, moderate protein intake might actually be good for you, helping guard against frailty. The work appears in the journal Cell Metabolism.
The study involved over 6,000 American adults over 50 years old who were taking part in t he National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)
III. This work is a national survey that looks at health and diet, and followed the participants for a full 18 years. The team saw that those from 50 to 65 years old who ate a
diet with a lot of animal protein were more than four times as likely to lose
their lives to cancer or diabetes, two times as likely to die from any cause over the study period (18 years) compared to those who ate a low protein diet.
Moderate amounts of animal protein intake brought a three times higher risk of cancer. The
effect dropped or disappears for those participants who got the protein in their
diet from plant sources. For those over 65, the effect was nearly opposite, high protein intake was associated with a 60% lower risk of dying from cancer, 28% lower risk of dying from any cause. The effects were similar for moderate levels of protein intake in this age group.
Fascinating that what's bad for people at one point in life might be good in another. Older people seem to benefit from a moderate intake of protein. Enough protein may be especially good for older people because it helps them keep at a healthy weight and from becoming frail.
High protein was defined by the researchers as an eating plan that got at least 20% of daily calories from protein, a moderate intake got from 10 to 19% of calories each day from protein. Low protein was under
10% of your daily calories derived from protein.

Raises Of Cancer Risk With High Protein Diet Continued...
Protein that came from plants (beans) did not raise the risk of cancer. This
might be due to the fact that proteins that are a natural part of plants have
a different makeup. They don't stimulate growth hormones as well as meat proteins
do. This suggests that the Mediterranean diet, one that's low in animal protein
and high in carbs, may be best in terms of lifespan.
There are lots of diets that have high amounts of protein and lower intake of sugars, and while they might make you drop a few pounds, it's not a good idea in the long run to help add to your lifespan. The risks of eating high protein are just as bad as smoking according to the researchers. Smokers are also four times as likely to die from cancer compared to those who don't smoke according to researcher Valter Longo, a professor of biology at the University of Southern California.
To
look at the link between consumption of protein and cancer, other researchers examined mice that were injected with mouse skin cancer cells. A high amount of protein in the mouse diet promoted the tumor's survival and growth by increasing the levels of growth hormone IGF-1. The team also measured levels of IGF-1 for 2,000 subjects randomly chosen from those in the study, finding that for every 10 nanograms per milliliter increase in IGF-1, those on the high protein diet were 9% more likely to
die from cancer than those on the low protein diet. The more protein you take in, the more trouble it can cause.
Researchers recommend eating almost 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of your body weight at midlife. So a person weighing 130 pounds would need to eat from 45 to 50 grams of protein each day, choosing plant proteins over animal ones.
To your good health,
