Almonds Increase Good Bacteria In The Gut

Dear Reader,

Almonds, known to be a great natural source of fiber, and their skin may also boost the populations of organisms known as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli in your digestive tract according to research appearing in the journal Anaerobe. Six weeks of intake of almond and their skins also cut numbers of the pathogen clostridum perfringens. This may bring an improvement in the microbial profile of the intestines that promises to be very beneficial in terms of health and disease prevention.

Almonds come in more forms than any other of the tree nuts and can be made to be deliciously crunchy or incredibly creamy. Almonds are the top nut associated with both snacking and eating well. People see these tasty treats as good for the heart and also helpful when it comes to managing weight. Data from Innova Market Insights shows just how popular almonds are - they're the number one ingredient in new food products made the world over, having shown dramatic increases in popularity since 2005.

Doctors know that the digestive tract plays a major part in your overall health - nearly 80% of your immunity begins here. The body is constantly trying to balance "good" bacteria against "bad" so that there are just the right amounts of each. Prebiotics serve as food for the good bacteria and are not digested by the body. A probiotic is a friendly bacteria that eats fiber, fat and other substances.

The latest work on prebiotics included 48 healthy volunteers between the ages of 18 and 22 years old. The subjects were randomly assigned to one of three different groups. One group supplemented their diet with 56 grams a day of roasted almonds. The second group added 10 grams a day of almond skins to their diet and the third group ate 8 grams a day of commercial fructooligosaccharides (FOS or non digestible carbs) to act as a control for the experiment.

Almonds Increase Good Bacteria In The Gut Continued...

After 6 weeks, the team saw that the almond and almond skin had different impacts on different strains of bacteria normally in the intestines. Both groups saw a significant increase in bifidobacterium and lactobacillius populations while there were no changes in E. coli levels. The levels for the almond skin and FOS groups remained high for two weeks after ingestion.

The roasted almonds didn't produce the stimulation of either organism until week six. The levels were similar to the almond skin groups.

This isn't the first time we've hard about prebiotic potential. Back in 2010 experts from the Institute of Food Research in Norwich England made use of something known as the Model Gut Platform to discover that both natural and blanched almond skins cause large increases in the populations of some digestive organisms. Almond skins were assigned a prebiotic index of 3.2, a number that compared well to other foods.

More work is needed to understand exactly what mechanisms in the almonds and their skins might be at work here. So while almonds haven't been proven to be beneficial (yet) they are a great tasting, good for you food to add to your diet. Always in moderation, of course.

To your good health,
