Not Supportive Mate Makes Depression Worse

Dear Reader,

Most time we hear that having a partner in life is a positive thing, good for your body, your mind and your life. But what about the times when a partner isn't so supportive - when they're critical or can't be counted on? That's actually worse for you in terms of depression risk than having no mate at all according to researchers on a new study that appears in the online publication PLOS ONE.

Maybe being single isn't all that bad after all.

Understand that clinical depression is considered a serious medical condition. Close to 20% of the U.S. adult population will deal with this condition at least one time over the course of a lifetime. Depression is crushing, debilitating and in now way an indication of weakness, character issues or modern times. It takes a toll on family and work, while also upping the risk of heart disease, cancer and debilitating stroke.

Quality of close relationships counts when it comes to feelings of depression according to Dr. Alan Teo who is a psychiatrist at the University of Michigan and study leader on the work. Quality counts the most with a life partner. Those who had critical or unsupportive spouses were more likely to deal with a major depression, while those who didn't have a mate had no higher depression risk.

The research team asked 4,642 subjects about their relationships and mental health back in the 1990s, and then once more a decade later. Ages of participants ranged from mid 20s to mid 70s. To really get at the quality of relationships, the team asked things like, "How much does your spouse/partner really understand the way you feel about things?" or "How much can you rely on him/her for help if you have a serious problem?"

Those with the most negative relationships were more than two times as likely to have depression as those with the most positive, supportive ones. If a primary relationship was strained that counted too according to the study. The team found out about these issues by asking questions such as: "How often does he/she criticize you?" and "How often does he/she get on your nerves?"

The quality of participants' relations with other family members also impacted the risk of depression, but not nearly as much as a spouse did. Friendships weren't found to be a factor, which is unlike earlier studies that found having a large and varied social network makes for a longer life.

Not Supportive Mate Makes Depression Worse Continued...

You can do things to help build the quality of your relationships. Interpersonal counseling or couples therapy can really help with communications issues and give you practical solutions that work in everyday life. You both have to want this, and be willing to work on the relationship.

It's also important to recognize that when you're depressed it's key to have people around you who are supportive. If you don't have that, you are entitled to it... no matter what anyone else says. To help yourself get the support you truly do need, try to...

- Acknowledge that there could be a reason behind another person's feelings that has nothing to do with you.

- Be your own support - be the kind, gentle friend you need and keep your self-talk on the positive side.

- Find support outside spouse/family by seeking out depression support groups, in person or online are both good options for sharing, helping you cope.

- Don't buy into another person's misconceptions or lose sight of the fact that you are dealing with a biologically based illness as best you can.

To your good health,
