Eat Today The Eight Health Boosting Herbs
Dear Reader,
Forget what you've heard, eating healthy can taste good, and be affordable too. Enter herbs. Not only are they a natural source of some pretty powerful nutrients, they are easy to grow and care for at home; plus they add a punch of flavor to many foods - so eating right doesn't have to be boring. What's more, since so much nutrient value is lost after plants are harvested, growing your own herbs allows you to harvest just what you need, fresh from your own low maintenance garden, and get the
total nutritional benefit.
To help you get started, we've put together a list of some of the easiest to grow, and most beneficial, herbs out there.
Basil's benefits to the heart have been hinted at by research from Xinjiang University that saw an extract cut blood pressure as much as mild beta-blockers can. It's also known to calm your nerves and is a good source of fiber. A hardy herb, it grows easily inside or out and only needs to be watered every other day. It's a welcome addition to pizza or used with mozzarella in any dish to add a bit of flavor.
If cravings are a battle for you, Coriander may be the herb
you'll want to grow first. Research in the British Journal of Nutrition saw that
coriander
stimulates the secretion of insulin and thus balances blood sugar. It's not too
challenging to grow at home, and is a great compliment to curry in many dishes.
A powerful, but natural diuretic, Mint helps to flush out excess
fluid so you look less bloated, and more defined. This herb needs lots of space,
as it will grow very well and very fast, so it can choke anything else planted
near it. This beneficial herb also freshens your breath and adds a dash of flavor
to peas or is a great addition to a salad.
Oregano can be a bit of a challenge to grow, but it's amazingly effective at relieving sore, aching muscles because it's loaded with beneficial beta-caryophyllene, a natural anti-inflammatory. As many good cooks already know, oregano is delicious when added to all types of pasta dishes.
Parsley is a rich source of apigenin, a natural substance that has been credited in studies appearing in Cancer Prevention Research with reducing the risk of developing cancerous tumors. It's super easy to grow as it doesn't need lots of sun, and should only be watered when the soil feels dry to the touch. It's a wonderful addition to any fish recipe.

Rosemary is pretty, and smells wonderful, but it also helps improve your brain function. Researchers have linked this herb's naturally high levels of a compound identified as 1,8-cineole, part of the reason behind faster and more accurate brain processing. This herb is super easy to grow - it needs full sun and lots of watering and is delicious when served with lamb or red potatoes.
Sage helps lower cholesterol because it's a fantastic source of antioxidants that bring down the fatty deposits in your arteries while cutting the LDL (bad) cholesterol. This herb is a bit high-maintenance in terms of growing, needing ample amounts of sun, good soil and watering every other day. It's great with turkey, or add a handful into sauces, soups and stews.
Thyme is good for your skeletal system. With plenty of small, pretty flowers, this herb looks as good as it tastes. Put it in a sunny window and this plant will deliver plenty of nature's own nutrients - only two sprigs meet half your recommended daily allowance of vitamin K, 10% of your RDA for manganese and 5% of your recommended calcium intake per day. Thyme works best when added to tomatoes or served alongside salmon.
To start your own herb garden, a visit to your local garden center or nursery is in order. You might try an already-sprouted starter garden, or buy your own planting tray, potting mix and seeds (or small starter plants) for growing indoors. If you choose to grow outside, try a 2 by 8 foot box of wood to hold plants.
To your good health,
