7 Suprising Things Stressing You Out

Dear Reader,

It's no surprise if you're feeling a bit tense these days. Work. The holidays. Family obligations and schedules keep you hopping. It's hard to find time for anything and easy to get stressed out. The stressors you know are one thing, but there are other culprits that contribute to your stress levels that you might not suspect. Here are seven to watch for.

STRESSOR 1 Cell phones: The modern must have makes you stress if you forget it, but being constantly attached to this device can actually be more stressful. A Kent State University study found that students who spent more time on their cell phones were more nervous. While you certainly can't banish it, try to keep it on silent for some down time every day. You deserve a peaceful dinner, sleep or workout.

STRESSOR 2 Social media: Another part of modern times, a study out of the University of Edinburgh saw that those with more Facebook friends felt more stress than those who didn't have as many. This may be due to the challenge of appeasing so many different people at once. If you're overthinking every post, like or share, step back. Log out for a time and remember how things were before we all got so social online.

And then there's this; research has found people who are on Facebook more than once a day are more apt to say they have conflicts in their relationships that come from their use of social media. These conflicts had a strong link with the most negative of relationship outcomes, cheating, breakups and divorces.

STRESSOR 3 Skipping sleep: Sure, stress can cut into your sleep, but experts tell us that things can work in reverse too. So if you've had sleep problems for more than two weeks, you need to talk with your doctor. Often treating an undiagnosed sleep disorder will improve your quality of life, and help lift depression and ease your stress.

STRESSOR 4 A messy room: Picking things up and putting them away matters. Work from earlier this year found that only 25% of women (1/3 of men) thought their bedrooms were relaxing. If you feel this way... where can you go to de-stress from the day and be at peace? You need a place to do this, we all do. If your room isn't restful, take steps to make your bedroom your own special place, and you'll be amazed at how wonderful it is to have a bedroom that's a true retreat... a place to let go of stress.

7 Suprising Things Stressing You Out Continued...

STRESSOR 5 What you deny yourself: Stress is often brought on by trying to deny yourself too rigidly. Feeling denied is hard to deal with on top of everything else. So, if you're determined to eat healthy, commit to making the long term changes needed to reach your goal. Make a plan that includes how you'll manage treats and stick with it. This way you can treat yourself in moderation so there's no guilt (or stress) when you enjoy an occasional treat.

STRESSOR 6 That last check in: If you've fallen into the habit of checking a social media site one last time before turning in, don't. A study from the University of Texas-Pan American saw that those who were online within two hours of bedtime had higher stress levels than those who were not online before bedtime. Keeping the laptop or tablet out of the bedroom is a great way to remove temptation from your path and make your sleeping space about rest.

STRESSOR 7 Having it all: Many people have come to realize the idea of "having it all" is a myth, but too many of us have not, and the idea is a terrible stressor. Truth is, no one has it all... look around and you'll see that everyone struggles, maybe not in the same way, or as intensely as you do, but we all have burdens to carry and things to go through. No one has all the answers... the whole idea of being "perfect" or "having it all" needs to be replaced with the reality of "doing the best you can".

To your good health,
