Be Aware About Dangerous Foods For Your Dog
Dear Reader,
It's hard to resist those pleading eyes, that adorable face or pose... but resist you must, especially when it comes to some foods. Did you know that a tortilla chip with guacamole can cause some big problems for a dog? There are things that we serve regularly that are a definite no-no for your four-legged companion.
Let's start off by talking about what your dog can eat. Ask your vet to recommend a good quality, nutritionally balanced food and feed according to the package directions.
If you do feed table food, keep the portions strictly limited and be sure the foods are cooked through, pure and not fatty or seasoned heavily.
Lean meats (cooked and without bones or fat) are fine as are slices of apples, oranges, bananas and watermelon. Be sure to remove any seeds, skins and stems as these can be trouble for your dog. Veggies like carrot sticks, green beans, cucumber or zucchini are all okay, as is a plain backed potato.
Pretty short list, isn't it? Now,
here's the much longer list of things you don't want to feed your dog... ever.
Avocados have a substance known as persin that's harmless for people who aren't allergic, but large amounts could be toxic to a dog.
Alcohol has the same effect on a dog's liver and brain as it does on a human, but it takes a whole lot less to do the job. A little can cause vomiting, diarrhea and depression of the dog's central nervous system. The smaller the dog, the greater alcohol's affect.
Chocolate is the one thing most people know to keep away from a dog. The toxic substance in chocolate (yes, even white chocolate) is theobromine. Dark chocolate, chocolate mulch and unsweetened baking chocolate are especially dangerous. Even just a bit of chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea and have your dog displaying excessive thirst. Ingesting chocolate can also cause abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death.
Coffee, tea or any caffeine as in large enough quantities caffeine can kill a dog, and there isn't any antidote. Symptoms of caffeine poisoning are restlessness, rapid breathing, heart palpitations, muscle tremors, fits and bleeding. This includes beans or grounds, as well as cocoa, chocolate, colas and energy drinks. Caffeine is also a part of some cold medicines and pain pills, so keep these, and all medications, out of the reach of your dog.
Fat trimmings and bones in table scraps seem like a no harm offering, but they do pose a danger to your dog. Fat trimmed from meat (cooked or uncooked) can cause pancreatitis in a dog. Dogs can choke on some bones, or they can splinter and cause an obstruction or cut of the digestive system.
Grapes and raisins have sometimes been used as a treat, but it's not a good choice. It seems that both these fruits cause kidney failure in dogs, and even a small amount can make a dog sick. Repeated vomiting is one of the early signs and then within 24 hours lethargy takes hold.
Macadamia nuts alone or in foods can be fatal to a dog, as few as 6 (raw or roasted) nuts can make a dog sick. The symptoms of poisoning are muscle tremors, weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters, vomiting, elevated body temperature and fast heart rate. Eating these nuts in chocolate will make the symptoms worse, and can possibly lead to the death of the animal.
Milk and other dairy products may seem harmless to share, but they do cause diarrhea and other digestive discomforts and could set up food allergies that show themselves as itchiness.
Onions/Garlic in all forms can damage a dog's red blood cells and lead to anemia. Eating a large quantity once, or smaller amounts on a regular basis could be trouble. The symptoms of anemia include weakness, vomiting, little interest in food, dullness and breathlessness.
Peaches, plums and persimmons are naturally full of seeds or a pit. Persimmon seeds can cause inflammation of the dog's small intestine, or an intestinal obstruction, as can the pits of a plumb or a peach. These pits also contain cyanide, poisonous to humans and dogs - we know not to eat them, dogs don't.

Be Aware About Dangerous Foods For Your Dog Continued...
Raw eggs bring the chance of food poisoning from bacteria in the egg. Plus an enzyme in raw eggs gets in the way of the absorption of a particular B vitamin and this can cause problems with your dog's skin or coat if eggs are fed for a long period of time.
Raw meat or fish can have bacteria, like raw eggs, that can cause food poisoning. Plus, some kinds of fish (salmon, trout, sturgeon) can have a parasite that causes "fish disease" in your dog. If not treated, the disease can be fatal in just two weeks. The first signs of an illness are vomiting, fever and enlarged lymph nodes. Cooking kills the parasite and protects your dog.
Salt is not a good thing for dogs, so sharing chips and other salty snacks should be avoided. Not only will it cause excessive thirst and urination, it can lead to sodium ion poisoning. Some symptoms you might see include vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, elevated body temperature and seizures. Death is unlikely, but possible.
Xylitol (a sweetener) in candy, gum, toothpaste, baked foods and even some diet foods can cause an increase in the insulin that's naturally circulating in your dog's body. Ingestion of this substance can cause a drop in blood sugar and liver failure. The first symptoms are vomiting, lethargy and loss of coordination. Seizures can happen eventually, and the liver failure can happen in just a few days.
Yeast dough, before baking bread dough needs to rise. This is what it would do in your dog's stomach, and as it swells it can stretch the abdomen and cause a lot of pain. Plus when the yeast ferments, it produces alcohol which can lead to alcohol poisoning.
