How To Stay Organized At Home And On The Job
Dear Reader,
These days all of us have lots on our minds. Work, home, schedules, meetings and due dates keep us hopping, and often forgetting important details. Staying organized helps you cut the clutter, be able to keep track of your things and take away some of the distractions that keep you from what you need to focus on. To help get you there, here are some simple tips you can use to keep yourself organized both at work and at home.
It's natural to be intimidated by the idea of getting
organized, especially if you've let things go for a while and the task is a big one. No matter how large or intimidating, there are things you can do to make changes that will really help. Start by putting everything back where it goes, then throw away things you don't need. You may have to work room by room, or do sections of a room; start with the room (or area) you think is the easiest to do. Schedule organization time into your day and use a timer to keep yourself on track. You can keep
from holding onto things too long by storing them in a separate box or bin, and if you do not touch this for six months toss it.
Make organization a daily habit by thinking of picking up as following your plan to stay organized. Make sure everything you keep has a home that's clearly labeled and take ten minutes each day to put things in the places they go. Keep a container for loose papers and go through it at regular intervals to help cut down on the accumulation of
clutter.
Also at home, keep smaller things that are easily misplaced together in one location always. Use a basket or tray to hold keys, wallets, watches or sunglasses. You can use the same space for things you need to remember to take with you, like lunchboxes, your briefcase or laptop or mail to be dropped off.
To stay organized, you also need to come up with a plan for handling the mail. One suggestion might be to designate one area for all-important mail that you review once a
week. That weekly slot is where you can sort bills to be paid, filing to be done. The obvious junk mail should not make it inside, or be kept separately and sorted on a schedule as well. You can help reduce the amount of junk mail you get by taking your name off those mailing lists.
To keep on top of your spending, write down what you spend by carrying a notebook (or using an app) to write down what you buy and what it costs. Do this even for the small purchases and you'll start to see
patterns of spending each week. This will help you manage your money more effectively going forward, and cut out the impulse spending.

How To Stay Organized At Home And On The Job Continued...
At work, the key is to focus on doing one task at a time, and finishing it before moving on to the next item on your "to do" list. If you're easily distracted, one thing that might help is to send your calls to voicemail, turn off the alert sounds of smartphone and email and then check your messages only at set times of the day. This keeps you from getting interrupted and lets you devote a good chunk of time to other tasks. Try to work in a quite place, so others in the area do not distract
you, headphones (or a white noise machine) work great at tuning out other distracting sounds, or you might try to work in an empty conference room or the cafeteria before/after the lunch rush.
A smart tip to keep you organized at work and at home is to check your planner (paper or electronic) three times a day. You want to be in the habit of putting all your appointments and activities on a central calendar, either on paper or digitally. Electronic reminders can help you keep track of
meetings, deadlines, appointments, even medications you need to take. Keep your calendar with you, or centrally located so you can check it at the three same times each day - when you arrive, at lunch and a half hour before going home are good suggestions, but set a schedule that works for your situation and stick to it.
Another great habit for work, or anytime, is to make a new "to do" list each day. First thing in the morning list all the things you need to get done that day. Be sure
to keep your list realistic and achievable, arranging your tasks in order of importance with the most important tasks first on the list. Cross off each thing once you complete it.
