Back Pain : Number One Cause Of Disability

Dear Reader,

There are lots of conditions you might think would top the list of disabilities before lower back pain, but the truth is about 1 in 10 suffer from this problem. This is a common, debilitating condition that impacts work and quality of life for many adults at some point. Amazingly people in America spend almost $50 billion a year on remedies for this painful condition according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). Lower back pain is also the top cause of job disability around the world.

The finding comes from a new study appearing in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases that included data from 117 studies from a total of 47 different nations as well as other surveys. Researchers saw that lower back pain is the top cause for years lost due to disability. This number is calculated by adding years lost from death to the number of years lived with a disability.

Lower back pain is most prevalent in Western Europe, lowest in Latin America and the Caribbean. The growing population of elderly people means there are more patients living longer with lower back pain. The researchers believe that lower back pain isn't getting the attention it needs from government, health services and research. We need to be more aware of the burden that low back pain causes to people.

Beyond lost productivity and years of life, lingering back pain brings clinicians a major issue, how to treat it. There are trusted standbys, heat and ice, and even surgery in very severe cases, though most low back pain can be managed without any surgery. Others get relief from acupuncture, analgesics or stronger pain medications.

Back Pain : Number One Cause Of Disability Continued...

When you visit the doctor for lower back pain your exam will include a detailed medical history and physical to help identify what's going on. You'll talk about the onset, site and severity of the pain you feel. Your doctor will ask how long the symptoms have been around, and if they limit your movement. Also talk about any earlier episodes of any condition that might be related to the pain. Your doctor will examine your back and perhaps order neurologic testing to see what's going on. Blood work may also be ordered, as might imaging tests.

Being sedentary, inactive, is thought to be one of the most common causes of lower back pain. This makes one of the best treatments getting up, and getting moving, with your doctor's okay of course. Exercise is likely the most effective way to speed your recovery and strengthen both your back and abdominal muscles. This is important for those with skeletal irregularities according to the NINDS.

The best workout for back pain involves some muscle work and stretching. Yoga can also do wonders, as can walking and swimming. Any discomfort that you may feel at the beginning of the workout will fade as you get stronger.

Sadly there's no "magic" treatment to prevent the onset of lower back pain, especially if you're growing older. As we age bone strength and muscle elasticity/tone decrease. Discs start to lose fluid and flexibility, and this lowers their ability to cushion the vertebrae. There are things you can do to keep yourself more comfortable as you deal with chronic lower back pain. Get more exercise, don't carry heavy bags, use proper body mechanics when lifting and try to focus on keeping your posture correct.

To your good health,
