How To Text Without Risking Thumb, Arm, Neck Pain

Dear Reader,

Like it or not… understand it or not, texting has become part of our world.

Where once a cell phone was just a way to talk on the run, now these everyday essentials come with keyboards that let you tap out a text message with surprising speed.

And while texters are enchanted by the smart new way to stay in touch, research out of Sweden shows that a hunched posture and using a single thumb to tap away on those insanely small keypads might be bringing on pain in the hand, arm and neck.

Our hand held devices are associated with a variety of stress and nerve compression problems.

When too much stress is placed on a part of the body (bringing pain, swelling, tissue damage or muscle strain) over a long period of time, repetitive stress injuries are the result.

Remember "Blackberry thumb", cell phone elbow (known to medicine as cubital tunnel syndrome) and Guitar Hero wrist (tendonitis of the wrist)?

In the worst of cases, excessive wear and tear, plus long term inflammation of the joints can lead to arthritis. This can cause pain in the affected area and swelling as well as less strength and impaired range of motion.

According to the Swedish researchers, it's not just your thumb that can have problems, but even your neck and back can be affected.

The team of researchers looked at the texting technique of 56 young adults, evaluating muscular electrical activity and thumb movements using an electrogoniometer, an electrical device that measures flexibility. Half the group was complaining of pain in the neck, arm or hand, while the other half had no such symptoms.

The team found that those who hunch over as they text, or typed using only one thumb had an increased risk of pain, compared to those who sat up straighter and used more than one finger.

"Considering how much we use the small mobile phone keypads, it is important that we learn how they affect our bodies," explains study author Ewa Gustafsson, an ergonomist at The Sahlgrenska Academy in Sweden. "We need to identify factors related to mobile-phone usage that may affect our health and ability to work."

Repetitive stress injuries like these might take years to show up.

So while doctors aren't seeing many patients complaining of texting-related injuries yet, that could change… especially as employers are asking for more and more in less time, and we're all becoming used to being hyper-connected at every hour of the day.

With estimates suggesting 82 million people worldwide are texting regularly, it's important to do all you can to keep yourself pain free…

- Don't sit in the same position for hours on end. Get up every half hour and take a break… stretch or walk about.

- Watch your posture. At your desk your monitor should be at eye level, both arms and knees should be bent at a 90-degree angle with your feet resting on the floor.

- Don't hunch while texting - instead rest the mobile device on a flat surface like a table or desk and lean against the back of a chair to see the keyboard.
