Obesity Rates Continue To Climb In U.S.

Dear Reader,

Obesity rates in the U.S. are headed in the wrong direction according to an annual report on obesity in America - rates of adult obesity climbed in 23 states and didn't go down in a single state.

Worse yet, the number of obese or overweight children is up to 30% in 30 states - this trend makes weight related health problems like heart disease, diabetes and even cancer, that much more of a concern as these kids grow into adulthood and beyond.

For the fifth year in a row, topping the list at 32.5%, Mississippi is the state with the most adult obesity. West Virginia, Alabama and Tennessee also have rates over 30%.

Eight of the ten states with the biggest (oh, sorry) number of obese adults and children are located in the southern part of the United States.

In 31 states, obesity rates are over 25%, and in 49 states (plus Washington, D.C.) the rates are over 20%. The report has over two thirds of American adults as being overweight or obese.

Colorado, at 18.9% is the state with the lowest rate of adult obesity. Minnesota and Utah had the lowest rates, both at 23.1%, for childhood obesity of kids aged 10 to 17.

Still, when it comes to childhood obesity in the rest of the country, the numbers are alarming. The rate has more than tripled since 1980.

"Throughout almost all of human history, calories have been relatively scarce and hard to get, and physical activity an unavoidable part of survival," explains Dr. David L. Katz, director of the Yale University School of Medicine Prevention Research Center.

"We have now devised a modern world in which physical activity is scarce and hard to get, and calories are unavoidable. We are the proverbial fish out of water, living in an environment totally at odds with our physiology."

On the plus side, the numbers show that the pace of the obesity epidemic may be starting to slow. It's not that we aren't getting fatter, but we're not adding pounds at the same rate as before.

Reversing the obesity trend won't be easy... or anything like a quick fix, but the just issued report, titled F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies Are Failing in America 2009 does see some bright spots.

Namely improvements in the number of states that have nutrition standards for food sold in schools as well as more states performing weight screening of children.

The report also has some suggestions on how policymakers can turn things around:

- Nutrition and obesity counseling, in both children and adults.

- Screening for obesity related diseases, in both children and adults.

- Create safe places for people to go and be active.

- Support programs (at local, state and federal levels) that provide healthy foods and beverages to schools, make them more affordable and support more activity during the school day - getting kids up and away from the desk, the TV and the computer.

- Encourage companies to offer workplace wellness programs.
