Exercise Is Better For You Than You Think
Dear Reader,
Exercising as a regular part of your life is known to bring benefits in the fight against added weight, as well as helping to improve mental health - fitting these workouts into your day is the hard part.
But before you pack the bag for the guilt trip when you miss a workout, there's something you need to know. According to the 2009 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, a comprehensive, real time voice of average American's measuring health and well being, exercise isn't necessary (or ideal) every day of the week.
It seems that even a modest amount, 30 minutes one or two days each week can have wonderful benefits (beating everyday exercise according to the report) to body and mind.
The Well-Being Index involves tracking the health and well being of U.S. residents 350 days a year, with each day including no less than 1,000 interviews of adults across the country.
The findings on exercise are based on almost 258,000 telephone interviews of those over 18 all across the U.S. Survey respondents were asked an in-depth series of questions on health and well being, the results are reported in daily, weekly and monthly averages.
The Well-Being Index finds that the number of days someone exercises is strongly connected with the likelihood of obesity.
This makes sense; no exercising during the week was associated with a 35% incidence of obesity, exercising as little as a half-hour, one to two days a week brought the incidence of obesity down to 28%.
The survey also found that those who exercised every day were slightly more likely to be obese than those who reported working out five to six days a week.
Brett W. Pelham a Gallup-Healthways analyst and author of the 2009 report, "Exercising several days a week seems about as good, and arguably is better, than exercising every day, especially when you consider return on investment."
When it comes to mental health and well being, the survey also investigated the link between number of days of exercise and quality of life.
There were questions to uncover if a respondent felt they were suffering, struggling or thriving in life. Just 30 minutes of exercise on one or two days of the week appeared to boost self-perceptions.
Once more there was a drop in the reported evaluation of life replies of those who exercised every day.
The survey also has a measure of emotional health that's based on daily experiences like laughing, smiling, being shown respect that occurred on the day before the interview.
Respondents who didn't exercise scored a 74 here; scores for those who exercised one to two days per week were higher. Everyday exercisers had slightly lower Emotional Health Index scores than those who worked out five or six days a week.

Exercise Is Better For You Than You Think Continued...
Depression too was found to be related to exercise - those who said they didn't exercise in the week prior to the interview were almost two times as likely to have been diagnosed with depression.
Five to six days of exercise per week had the best result here according to the report. Those who exercised daily were more likely to be diagnosed with depression than either of the groups who exercised less often, 3 to 4 or 5 to 6 days of each week.
"One cannot say whether regular exercise reduces depression or whether depression reduces exercise," Pelham writes. "However, in the past decade, researchers have conducted experimental and prospective studies that followed depressed people over time. Such studies show exercise can ease feelings of depression and improve mood."
The authors do suggest that getting the maximum amount of exercise might not be all that beneficial in terms of well being.
This is not to say that those who workout every day should stop, but it's certainly something to keep in mind if you find yourself struggling to get those daily workouts in - maybe a day off is okay.
There is some reason to think that an intense exercise regimen could tax your resources (physiological and psychological) beyond what is best for you.
To your good health,
