Who Are The Angriest Americans
Dear Reader,
Anger is a natural human emotion - a part of life. New research has just identified who among us tend to be angriest - And it's the young, anyone with children at home and those with less education.
This comes from a national survey conducted in 2005 of 1,800 Americans over 18 who were questioned on how and when they feel anger in order to build "a broader social portrait of anger in the United States," says researcher Scott Schieman at the University of Toronto.
Angry emotions range from mild annoyance to feelings of pure fury and outrage, including yelling. You can be angry at both external events like a traffic jam and internal things like worry or memories of traumatic events. And while some level of anger is necessary to our survival, when we're lashing out at everyone and anger is impacting your relationships or other key parts of your life, it might be time for help in expressing this emotion.
The results of the survey won't be released in full until next year as a chapter in the upcoming book International Handbook of Anger, but here's a sneak peek at the highlights:
- People under 30 years old experienced anger of all forms and intensity levels more often than older adults. This may be because young people are affected most by three core stressors - Time pressures, economic hardships and troubles at work.
- Time pressures are strongly linked to anger, especially low-levels like feelings of annoyance.
- Economic pressures brought reports of higher levels of anger, which is very important considering the current economic conditions. This influence was strongest among young adults and women.
- Having kids was also linked to angry feelings and behaviors like yelling, most often in women according to the survey (No surprise to all the moms reading!) Having to discipline a naughty child is very likely to bring on feelings of anger or annoyance.
- Less education also causes people to report feelings of anger, and these subjects were less likely to respond proactively in a situation that makes them angry. As higher education levels have been linked to having more self-control, this might explain why these people are better able to manage their anger.
Holding onto anger, keeping it bottled up inside can impact more than just your mood, but also your lifespan according to the results of another survey of married couples conducted by experts out of the University of Michigan School of Public Health and Psychology Department.
Husbands and wives who bottled up their anger (adding to stress) died earlier than couples who had it out and resolved the conflict.
There are tests psychological professionals can use to measure the intensity of your anger, how prone to anger you are and how well you handle it.
Chances are if you do have an anger issue, you already know it. Psychologists believe that those who struggle with anger may have a lower tolerance for frustration that may have a genetic or physiological component.
There is evidence that there are certain babies who are just born irritable, touchy or easily set off. Another cause may be family background or sociocultural - we're taught other feelings are okay to express, but anger is not - which means we never learn how to express anger properly.

Who Are The Angriest Americans Continued...
Releasing anger can be healthy and empowering in some situations, but there are also ways to help yourself deal with anger.
- Find out what triggers your anger, and then work on strategies to keep these things from setting you off next time.
- Relaxation exercises like deep breathing and imagery can help ease angry feelings; you might repeat a calming phrase to yourself. Yoga like exercises can also relax muscles and make you feel calmer.
- Change the way you think - eliminate words like "never" and "always" from your vocabulary (and your thoughts). Remind yourself that anger isn't going to change things, it may only alienate and humiliate those who can help you.
- Remember logic defeats anger as anger, even when justified, can quickly become irrational. Use cold, hard logic on yourself - the world isn't out to get you, you're just experiencing some of life's normal ups and downs.
- For very real, inescapable problems, don't focus your energy on solving the problem, but rather on how you handle yourself as you face it.
- Don't make yourself look at things that infuriate you. Keep yourself calm instead.
- If you're in a heated argument, slow down and think about what you're saying. Don't say the first thing that comes to mind, think. Listen.
- Make sure that you have some personal time when you find yourself feeling most pressured during the day.
To your good health,
