Dear Reader

Cutting just half a teaspoon of salt a day from the intake of most U.S. adults would prevent 92,000 deaths, 99,000 heart attacks and 66,000 strokes according to predictions from computer models that used actual clinical data to judge the effects of the change.

Less salt is as big a benefit to health as is quitting smoking, according to work that appears in the January 20, 2010 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

If you’re concerned about your blood pressure numbers, and are looking for a way to loose weight, a low-carb diet is your best bet according to some new research appearing in the January 25, 2010 issue of the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.

In the study, overweight or obese subjects who followed a low-carb diet lost about the same amount of weight as those who cut down on their fat intake while also taking weight loss drug Xenical or Alli.

If you’re worried about those little slips of memory that come as you get older, like where you put the keys, a phone number or someone’s name, then there’s new work that offers some hope.

Neuroscientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Beijing’s Tsinghua University find that upping your intake of magnesium – an essential mineral in dark, leafy veggies and some fruits, beans and nuts – might just help with the memory lapses that happen as we age.

Weekly Round-up continued...

New research finds that the more overweight you are, the more likely you are to have a stroke.

Using data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study, the team followed 13,549 middle aged (45-65 years) Americans for nearly 20 years, looking to see if ischemic stroke risk was associated with several measures of obesity; body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio.

The intriguing report has just been published online in the journal Stroke.
