Common Beverage Reduces Risk Of Stroke

Dear Reader,

While coffee drinking has been linked to lower risks of type 2 diabetes and cognitive impairment, the results on stroke risk and coffee have been mixed.

Now some new, more rigorous work confirms earlier findings - drinking coffee might have an impact on the risk for some health conditions.

The latest study of 23,000 men and women who were followed for an average 12 years found that coffee consumption was inversely related to stroke risk. Lead researcher Yangmei Li presented the findings at the American Stroke Association's annual conference, held this year in San Antonio, Texas.

Here's how the numbers stack up. The subjects were between the ages of 39 and 79 years old and had no stroke history, heart disease or cancer when they provided the information in the mid 1990s. Overall, 17,807 reported drinking some amount of coffee, an average of just over 3 cups a day. A full 4,425 said they never drank any coffee.

Over the next dozen years, 855 of the study respondents had strokes.

Those who reported some coffee intake had a 27% lower risk of stroke than those who said they never drank coffee.

However, drinking more coffee didn't bring a bigger reduction in stroke risk. "This association was consistent in subgroup analyses stratified by sex, age, social class, educational level, smoking status, alcohol drinking, tea drinking, physical activity, plasma vitamin C and diabetes status," Li explains.

Men seemed to get more of a benefit from coffee drinking than women, but when all the statistics were run, any difference didn't pan out.

If you smoked, drinking coffee brought a 61% reduced risk of stroke. What's more, the reduction in risk came no matter what type of coffee you drank... with caffeine, decaf, instant or ground. And you could drink one cup, or four, it didn't matter in terms of stroke risk reduction.

Earlier work has found evidence that coffee might improve insulin sensitivity in the body, which would help protect against type 2 diabetes.

Other studies suggest coffee might inhibit blood clots by limiting platelet aggregation. There's even research that found the components of the coffee might act as anti-inflammatory agents, and perhaps have antioxidant effects as well.

Commenting on the study, Daniel Lackland, DrPH of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston pointed to a study weakness, self reported data. This makes it hard to tell the real quantity of coffee people drank - cups are all different shapes and sizes after all, making consistency of measurement a real challenge.

Common Beverage Reduces Risk Of Stroke Continued...

While the research wasn't designed to make official recommendations on coffee drinking, it is intriguing. It also makes no effort to explain just how coffee drinking might impact stroke risk.

If you're worried about your stroke risk, take other steps, now, to reduce your risk.

While you can't change things related to your genetics or your age (your risk doubles for each decade after 55) or natural processes, lifestyle factors are under your control.

Stop smoking, control your blood pressure and cholesterol, treat diabetes, heart or artery diseases and follow a healthy diet. Be active for at least half an hour on most days of the week.

These are the things experts know are most helpful in reducing your stroke risk. Of course if you like coffee, there's no harm (and perhaps some benefit) to enjoying a cup or two of this aromatic, delicious beverage.

To your good health,

Kirsten Whittaker
