Revealed: New Tip For Long Term Weight Loss...

Dear Reader,

A recent University of Florida study suggests that losing weight quickly, rather than gradually as you've heard before, at least in the first stages of your weight loss plan might be vital to dropping those pounds over the long term.

This is the type of weight loss that viewers see on the TV show "The Biggest Loser" where severely obese contestants who are inactive and not in good shape are subjected to marathon workouts and strict eating plans. Many weight loss experts believe this method worrisome and perhaps counterproductive.

Your doctor will tell you that successful weight loss in anyone considered obese is defined as a reduction of 10% (or more) of initial body weight that's maintained for at least a year.

Reaching this milestone is a smart step in the right direction as the risks for heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and some cancers go up as the numbers on the scale get bigger and go down as the numbers on the scale drop.

Researcher Lisa Nackers and her team, out of the University of Florida, looked at 262 middle aged obese women who were participating in a 6-month weight loss program.

The subjects were encouraged to cut their calorie intake and increase the amount of exercise to achieve an average loss of just under a pound (.45 kilograms) a week for the first 6 months.

Then, during the next year, the subjects got weight loss support - twice monthly group sessions, telephone contact or newsletters.

The team found that some women lost weight quickly, others were more gradual and still others were slow to lose anything during the first month of the research.

Women in the quick initial weight-loss group dropped over 1.5 pounds (0.68 kg) a week; in the moderate group, the weight loss each week was between 0.5 to 1.5 pounds (0.23 to 0.68 kg), while less than 0.5 pounds (0.23 kg) a week was the loss posted by the slowest losers.

By the end of the study, those who lost weight quickly dropped an average of about 30 pounds (13.5 kg) while the moderately fast losers were 20 pounds (8.9 kg) lighter, and those in the slow initial loss group were 11 pounds lighter by the end of the study.

Revealed: New Tip For Long Term Weight Loss... Continued...

The women in the quick initial weight loss group not only dropped more weight overall, they kept it off for longer and were not more likely to put it back on than those who lost weight more slowly.

Subjects who lost weight quickly to start were also five times more likely to reach the clinically significant 10% of initial body weight marker at 18 months than those in the slower group. Women in the moderate initial loss group were nearly three times more likely to reach that ten percent point than the slowest losers.

The take home message for weight loss?

More work needs to be done before anyone will tell you starting out fast, or going more slowly, is the right choice.

Despite what you see on hit TV shows, the best anyone can say now is that losing weight is a smart move for your health, today and in the future. The study appears online in the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine.

To your good health,
