Surprising Results from the Latest Caffeine Study...

Dear Reader,

Those of us who love our coffee believe we're getting a jolt of caffeine that improves our alertness... gets us ready for the day, in fact, almost 80% of the world's population drink coffee on a daily basis, yet despite what we all think caffeine does for us, new research finds coffee drinkers are actually no more alert than non-coffee drinkers.

It appears that a cup of coffee only holds off the effects of caffeine withdrawal (headaches for instance) that have built up overnight. If you don't drink coffee all that much, but grab a cup as an emergency pick me up, the study shows you aren't any more alert, plus you have the pleasure of dealing with feelings of anxiety and withdrawal the next day.

Caffeine is a natural substance that has been called the most commonly used drug in the world. It is a part of coffee, tea, sodas, chocolate, some nuts, energy drinks and a few drugs.

Some people are more sensitive to the effects than others. For most of us, a few cups a day isn't anything to worry about, however having too much will have you anxious and irritable and might also keep your from sleeping well that night.

The study, published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology involved 379 volunteers who avoided caffeine for 16 hours.

After this, the subjects were given a caffeine pill (100 milligrams or the equivalent of one or two cups of coffee) or a placebo. An hour and a half later, participants got a slightly higher dose (150 milligrams) of caffeine or another placebo.

The team asked about the subjects' normal consumption of caffeine and then administered a standard questionnaire known as the Mood, Alertness and Physical Sensations Scales to measure emotional state and alertness.

The responses of the subjects depended on their normal consumption of coffee. About half used medium to high levels of caffeine (a few cups a day), while others had little or no coffee (under 40 milligrams or one cup) each day at all.

Caffeine didn't improve the alertness of any group above the levels found in non-users who took the placebo. Caffeine drinkers who stayed away for 16 hours felt less alert and had more intense headaches than those who'd gotten their usual dose. In fact, four subjects had to drop out of the study because of the severity of their headaches.

So rather than giving us a much needed wake up call, that morning cup of coffee is simply resupplying the body with caffeine to keep withdrawals in check. But we believe the drink gives us something... and so it seems to.

Surprising Results from the Latest Caffeine Study... Continued...

For those who didn't usually drink coffee, a dose of caffeine brought up their anxiety levels.

Those who had a variant of a gene known as ADORA2A (about 20% of the subjects) that's been linked to panic attacks, got particularly nervous after a caffeine dose; interesting that these were also the subjects who tended to drink the most coffee, suggesting that mild feelings of tension might actually add to the enjoyment of the caffeine high.

Medium to high level users didn't get any more anxious after ingesting the caffeine, supporting the notion that regular consumption helps you build a resistance to the anxiety-producing effect.

This research is important because earlier work into the effect of caffeine didn't have as many participants. And the DNA samples are particularly valuable to researchers.

It's certainly an interesting look at how caffeine affects the body. It might not be enough to have you cutting your intake (nor is anyone suggesting you should), but it gives you some insight into just why you can't seem to get going without that steaming, delicious smelling cup of brew.

To your good health,
