Health Warning for High Heels as Anatomy Altered...

Dear Reader,

Few women can resist a pair of heels, and we'll wear them despite any pain they might cause... just for what they do for our legs. They can make an outfit... make a statement... making a little discomfort a small price to pay.

In fact, estimates have one in ten women donning a pair heels at least three days a week, though experts tell us this frequency is enough to do some painful damage to your body.

Researcher Marco Narici from Manchester Metropolitan University had observed what heel wearing was doing to women's feet, and wondered if long term wearers had undergone physical changes to the body.

The result of his efforts, appearing in the Journal of Experimental Biology, finds that the long term cost to the body of wearing these styles is pretty significant.

Not only can these sky high heels bring a variety of foot deformities along with a clear link to back, knee and ankle problems, years of high heel wearing can literally alter the anatomy of a woman's calf muscles and tendons.

For the study, the team recruited 80 women, 20 to 50 years old, who had been wearing at least 2-inch heels almost daily for two years of more. Of the total, 11 reported discomfort when walking in flatter styled shoes.

When compared to subjects who didn't wear heels, the heel wearers had calf muscle fibers shown on ultrasound to be 13% shorter than non heel wearers. MRIs revealed the Achilles tendon, the one that attaches the heel bone to the calf muscle, was thicker and stiffer in heel wearers than in those who didn't wear heels regularly.

It's the incline of the heels that causes the calf muscles to contract. Over time the muscle fibers shorten and the Achilles tendon thickens. This can cause pain when you try to walk in another type of shoe... sneaker or flat, for example.

A spokesman for the American Podiatric Medical Association, Dr. Johanna Youner acknowledges that high heels look beautiful and are the height of fashion... it's just our bodies aren't meant to wear them. When you do, you are going to deform your body.

And before you flip-flop wearing girls start congratulating yourselves on your choice of footwear, those flat styles aren't necessarily any better for your body. Youner points out that these styles are meant for the beach, the sand. Flip flops offer no arch support, and doctors are seeing some nasty injuries to the foot from those walking on pavements or attending amusement parks.

To protect yourself, and your feet, you'll need to give up those heels. If you cant, try to...

- Cut down the amount of time you spend on your feet - 3 hours at a time is the maximum amount. Take a break, kick the shoes off and massage your feet before putting the heels back on.

- Some women find it helpful to choose other styles... wedges, platforms or thick, stacked heels, though experts believe any style that raises your heel up above the ball of the foot is bad for you.

Health Warning for High Heels as Anatomy Altered... Continued...

- Rounded or open toes give toes room to move.

- Keep heel height to under 1.5 inches, 2 or 3 inches on rare occasions.

- When not in heels choose a pair of well-cushioned, supportive sneakers or padded dress shoes to give your feet some rest and support.

- Soft gel or foam insoles can be helpful for extra shock absorption.

- Be sure those heels are a proper fit - not so tight you have squeeze into them, not so loose your foot slides forward, putting more pressure on your toes. Many experts recommend you shop for shoes at the end of the day, when you foot is at its largest.

While no one is suggesting you give up your heels if you love them, it's up to you to wear them wisely so you get the look you like, without paying a physical price.

To your good health,
