Omega-3s Fatty Acids: Essential To Body And Mind...
Dear Reader,
Omega-3 fatty acids are one of those rare nutrients that we need to stay healthy, yet can't be made inside our own body. In fact, you need to eat these good-for-you fats a few times each week, as recommended by the American Heart Association, to get to a level that's adequate to meet the needs of your body.
According to Richard J. Deckelbaum, MD director of the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia University, omega-3s are best known for supporting the health of the heart and brain but there are ample studies to suggest omega-3s offer benefits to diseases like cancer, asthma, depression, heart disease, ADHD and autoimmune diseases.
Understand that omega-3 fatty acids are not a single nutrient, but a collection that includes EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). DHA has been shown to be important in the developing brains of infants, and may also help the brain at the end of life as well. Early work has found that higher DHA intake might help prevent age related dementia.
Omega-3 fatty acids are naturally part of the fatty layers of cold water fish (halibut, salmon, mackerel, sardines, trout, herring and tuna packed in water) and shellfish as well as anchovies, plant and nut oils, English walnuts, flaxseed, algae oils and an ever increasing number of fortified foods. Getting good fats from food is the best way to go as 90% of the nutrient (vs. 50% of the supplement form) is absorbed into the body according to nutritionists.
Deckelbaum believes it may take two to three weeks of eating enough omega-3 rich foods to achieve a healthy level in the body. If you have heart disease, try for 1 gram of omega-3s a day.
Despite the much-publicized warnings on mercury or other contaminants in fish, experts tell us you can still safely eat the recommended 12 ounces a week without fear. Only pregnant women or small children should be concerned about contamination advisories.

Omega-3s Fatty Acids: Essential To Body And Mind... Continued...
If you're thinking the fish oil capsules will help you avoid contamination, you
need to understand that these may well have concentrated amounts of the very
same toxins you're trying to avoid in fresh fish. An unpleasant body odor can
also come from such supplements. Never, under any circumstances, take more than
the amount recommended on the bottle, and be sure to talk with your doctor before
you begin any supplementing program.
There is one area where fish oil supplements have shown themselves to be tremendously
helpful - lowering levels of triglycerides, the blood fat that's linked to heart
disease. If you have extremely high levels of triglycerides, the American Heart
Association recommends you take in 2 to 4 grams of omega-3 (with both EHA and
DHA) each day.
Remember that even in the U.S., supplements like omega-3s aren't as regulated
as you might expect. Stay away from "too good to be true" claims, or products
backed by research that isn't printed in a respected, peer reviewed journal.
Reputable manufactures will make a point of touting the quality manufacturing
processes they use... others will be silent.
In the end, the natural way is always best. So try some of the many heart healthy
recipes out there, or add some tasty fish dishes to your menu. You'll be doing
something good for both your body and your mind.
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
