Is There A Down Side To Downsizing Your Waistline..?
Dear Reader,
Yet another reason for keeping your weight under control. According to new research losing weight might have an unintended side effect, sending a flood of environmental pollutants into the bloodstream.
We know that body fat stores pollutants (DDT and PCBs for example), and as these cells are broken down (as they are when you lose weight), the chemical compounds are released into the blood and can cause disease according to South Korean researchers out of Kyungpook National University in Daegu.
Diseases that have been linked to persistent organic pollutants include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
Many of the persistent organic pollutants involved in the study have been banned in developed countries for some time now. A good number of them were pesticides; others were used in industrial processes. What's troubling is even though these substances aren't being used today; they remain in our environment and are able to accumulate in both human and animal tissues.
The team of researchers, led by Dr. Duk-Hee Lee, analyzed data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between 1999 and 2002. They chose seven different pollutants that had the highest detection rate in blood samples and focused on 1,099 subjects over 40 who had measurable levels of these substances in their blood, and had also lost or gained weight.
At the end of the study, the researchers found that those who had lost weight had higher levels of most of the pollutants that were being measured, while those who gained weight seem to have lowered the pollutant concentrations. The trend seemed especially significant for those who said they gained or lost weight over a ten-year period.
Once these chemicals are in the blood, they can reach organs like the brain or heart.
No one is suggesting we all stop trying to lose weight. There are many good reasons to drop those extra pounds. Doing so lowers levels of sugar and fat in the blood, as well as bringing down blood pressure. But you should also be aware of the down side - an increase in the concentration of some pretty nasty pollutants in the blood. Lee has also been involved in an earlier study that linked losing weight to calcification of the coronary arteries.

Is There A Down Side To Downsizing Your Waistline..? Continued...
So what can you do to lose weight without the risk of pollutants? Lee recommends
exercising and following a plant-based diet to help the body rid itself of troublesome
substances. Naturally not being overweight in the first place is a big help...
but for a growing number of us, the door has closed on that hope and we must
deal with our bodies as they are now.
Since the study was based on self-reported information on weight, distortions
in the amount of weight lost or gained are possible. This is a weakness of the
research.
When it comes to weight loss, it's important to keep in mind that to lose one
pound of fat, you must burn 3,500 calories, over and above what you burn during
your normal daily activities. That means a whole lot more activity. You'll also
need to keep track of how many calories you eat, as well as how much you burn
each day with exercise and activity. Lasting weight loss success comes from burning
more calories than you take in.
To your good health,
