What Laptop Users Need To Know About Toasted Skin Syndrome...
Dear Reader,
Laptop users listen up! There's a report in the November 5, 2010 issue of the journal Pediatrics that discusses the case of a 12-year-old boy who developed a sponge-patterned discoloration on his left thigh. He had played computer games on a laptop, resting it on his upper legs for a few hours a day for several months in a row. Just as laptops are intended to be used, and are being used by millions of us. The boy's condition carries a technical name erythema ab igne, and a more pronounceable one - toasted skin syndrome.
The condition can bring permanent darkening of the skin, and in rare cases, cause damage that can be serious enough to lead to skin cancer.
You may notice a mild red, blotchy rash... or a general redness of the skin in the affected area. There can be mild itchiness and a burning sensation, or no bothersome feeling at all. The skin may be a brownish, toast like shade.
This condition had been seen before on the lower legs of those who worked in front of open fires or coal stoves. Elderly patients using heating pads are also sometimes affected.
The boy in this case had noticed that the laptop did get hot on the left... but typical boy; he didn't do anything about this... such as changing the position of the computer, or playing less often. This patient is the youngest of ten reported cases of "laptop induced dermatosis" since the condition was first identified in 2004. All ten had brownish lesions on one or both of their upper legs that developed after several weeks (or months) of laptop use of 6 to 8 hours a day.
It might surprise you to learn that mild to moderate heat between 109.4 to 116.6 degrees Fahrenheit can cause burns, but 111.2 degrees is all it takes to bring on toasted skin syndrome. When caused by a laptop, the lesions are typically found on the thigh of one leg because the optical drives of laptops are on the left side and ventilation is blocked because of where the computer is sitting... on your lap.

What Laptop Users Need To Know About Toasted Skin Syndrome... Continued...
It's believed the heat that causes the problem comes from the laptop's optical
drive, the battery or the ventilation fan. The underside of a laptop computer
is a lot warmer than you might think. Some manufacturers have warning labels
on their products regarding heat emission, others don't. The researchers also
recommend the wider use of a warning label that would alert consumers to possible
skin problems that can come from using a laptop.
Protect yourself by putting something (a pillow, the laptop carrying case, a
magazine, a blanket or sweatshirt, a lap desk) between your lap and the computer,
avoiding placing the hot underside directly against your bare skin. Better yet,
use the machine on a table or other hard surface. Know too that children's skin
may be more sensitive to the heat than an adult's - something to think about
when buying a computer that a child will be using.
If you, or someone you love, already has such a rash, the good news is that experts
agree this condition usually does not bring any long-term complications.
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
