Ten Top Home Remedies To Help You Fight The Flu...
Dear Reader,
It's that time of year... when the idea (or memory) of flu symptoms has us all scheduling those annual flu shots. If you're worried about the fever, the cough, the sore throat, the nasal congestion, along with those awful aches and chills that don't just last for a day or two, but hang on for fourteen endless days, you're not alone.
Antiviral medications can help symptoms, if you take them right after you get sick. But there are home remedies, ten all-natural ones we've listed here, that can also help you handle those flu symptoms.
1. Drink up so that you're giving your body enough fluids to combat the water lost due to fever, vomiting or diarrhea. Your best drink choices are water, fruit juices, soda and electrolyte drinks. Herbal tea with honey soothes your throat. Stay away from caffeinated drinks or alcohol. If you're sick to your stomach, take small sips of liquid or use ice chips and popsicles to give your body the liquid it needs. You know you're getting enough if your urine is a nearly colorless pale yellow.
2. Savor some soup a study in 2000 published in the journal Chest demonstrated to science that chicken soup may indeed ease the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections. Some doctors don't credit the soup, they believe that as you lean over the steaming bowl vapors go up your nose and ease your breathing.
3. Rest on the couch as the fatigue you're feeling is the signal that your body needs you to lie down so resources can be focused on combating your illness. Allow yourself to spend those days on the couch. When you're sick you're in no position to exercise or go about your regular responsibilities. If you try, you'll end up being sicker, longer. Not only do you need to rest during the day, but at night as well. Good sleep (at least 8 hours) helps the immune system work better.
4. Humidify the air, as breathing moist air helps break up nasal congestion and soothe a sore throat. A steam filled shower is a great choice, but if you don't have the energy, you can turn the shower to hot and sit in the steam filled bathroom a few times each day. You can get a similar effect by using a humidifier, but be sure to clean it regularly so it's free of mold or other impurities.
5. Pitch a tent as a simple way to open those clogged airways. Bring a pot of water to a boil, take it off the stove, drape a towel over your head and then lean over the water pot under your tent. Breathe deeply through your nose for 30 seconds. You can add a drop or two of peppermint or eucalyptus oil to the water if you choose.
6. Use a warm compress on your forehead and nose to help ease sinus pain or a headache.

7. Be a sucker and enjoy cough drops, throat lozenges and hard
candy to ease your cough or sore throat. Lozenges made with slippery elm or zinc
can be effective in easing symptoms or shortening their duration.
8. Gargle with salt water to help get rid of mucus that collects
at the back of your throat. Doing this can also help open clogged eustachian
tubes.
9. Irrigate nasal passages to ease congestion and post nasal
drip, perhaps even cut the risk of a sinus infection. You can do this with a
neti pot that you can buy at some drugstores or natural foods stores, or use
a saline squeeze bottle. Pour the salt water in one nostril and let it drip out
the other to wash away congestion.
10. Line up help so that you have someone to fetch and carry
for you... to make you soup or tea... to keep up on simple chores around the
house. If a family member or friend offers help, take them up on it.
So while suffering with the flu is no picnic... these all natural home remedies
can help to have you up and about, and feeling better in no time.
To your good health,
