U.S. Obesity Rate Set to Rocket to 42% By 2050...

Despite reports that U.S, obesity rates are slowing, a new projection from Harvard University and MIT suggests otherwise. Using a sophisticated model that looks at obesity like an infectious disease, the researchers predicted a rise in rates of adult obesity for another forty years before the numbers level out. Before we reach that place, 42% of adults will be considered obese.

The CDC has put the adult obesity rate at 34% for the last few years. Another 34% of adult Americans are considered overweight, but not obese.

Being obese means you have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, a BMI number between 25.0 and 29.9 is considered overweight. Not surprisingly, there are mobile applications to help you get your number right on your handheld device.

Carrying more weight than you should increases your chances of being diagnosed with diseases or other life altering health problems.

The Harvard scientists used a mathematical model on data from the Framingham Heart Study - a study following over 5,000 adults who live in Framingham, MA that's been underway since 1948 to look at heart health. The authors define a "social network" as family, people at work, friends and neighbors in your life.

The social contagion hypothesis got a lot of attention back in 2007 when a team from UC San Diego first documented that obesity can spread through a social network, just like a cold or virus does. The work, appearing in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggests that people can "infect" each other with their own feelings and beliefs about weight.

The analysis found that a normal weight person has a 2% chance of becoming obese. That number goes up by 0.4% for each obese social contact you have. If you have 5 obese contacts you double your risk for obesity.

No one understands just why hanging out with obese people ups your risk, but it may be that what's "normal" to eat changes if you have heavier friends. Added weight has become more socially acceptable - plus size models, heavier celebrities and no encouragement to make a change may all play a part.

When it comes to losing weight, an obese adult has a 4% chance of losing enough to reach the overweight category in any given year. But the weight loss didn't appear to be impacted by social contacts.

So if you're obese and you hang out with normal weight adults you won't lose the extra weight because of these contacts. But you should know that even a small weight loss (5-10% of your body weight) can make a big difference in your health and how you feel.

The researchers make the point that other things also play into the spread of obesity, including the rate of "non-social transmission" such as ready access to unhealthy foods and our sedentary lifestyles. These factors are more important in terms of the spread of obesity, but the part played by social transmission has expanded in the past 40 years and needs to be recognition.

The latest prediction is considered a "best case" scenario according to study author Alison Hill, a graduate student in Harvard's Program for Evolutionary Dynamics. A paper on the work appears in the journal PLoS Computational Biology.

The take home message from the research is that it's in you're best interest to help your friends get healthier. Experts know that whenever one person in a relationship is trying to change by altering the way they always were, this changes the dynamic of the relationship. Sometimes this makes it hard to know how to help... what type of support to offer. But it's your own best interest to help them lose weight.
