Prevent 23% Of Colorectal Cancers With These Simple Steps...

Dear Reader,

In a report published online in the October 27, 2010 issue of BMJ, Danish researchers believe that as many as 23% of colorectal cancers could be prevented if everyone followed five lifestyle recommendations. The five are:

1) At least 30 minutes of exercise a day.

2) A healthy diet that's high in fiber with more than 6 servings of fruits and veggies while limiting red and processed meats to just over one pound per week. Less than 30% of your total calories should come from fat.

3) No more than 7 drinks of alcohol a week for women; 14 drinks a week for men.

4) Not smoking.

5) Keeping your weight at a healthy level; not letting your waist size get over 34.6 inches for women; 40.1 inches for men.

Some of these are easier to implement than others, to be sure, though not one is so demanding that it can't become a part of your life. Making one change is good... making two (or more) is even better.

The good news is that even a modest change in your habits could have a substantial impact on your risk of colorectal cancer according to study lead Dr. Anne Tjonneland of the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology of the Danish Cancer Society in Copenhagen. The team looked at data on 55,487 subjects aged 50-64 years who were cancer free at the start of the study.

All the study participants filled out a lifestyle questionnaire that included questions on social facts, health stats, reproductive history and lifestyle habits. A food frequency questionnaire was also completed, covering what subjects ate over one year. During a decade of follow up, 678 of the study subjects developed colorectal cancer. If the subjects adopted just one healthy lifestyle recommendation from those above the team found that 13% of the colorectal cancer cases could have been prevented.

If the study subjects had followed all 5 lifestyle recommendations, there would have been a 23% lower colorectal cancer cases.

Prevent 23% Of Colorectal Cancers With These Simple Steps... Continued...

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. It's the third cause of cancer death in men and women. Using what we know about living a healthy lifestyle, along with increasing screening, could have a huge impact on preventing this type of cancer.

In another study in the same issue of BMJ, Australian researchers found that those who didn't have a high school diploma and who got information about colon cancer screening via an interactive booklet and DVD ended up more informed than those who got only standard screening information. This didn't have an impact on whether the more informed group got screened; these subjects were still less likely to undergo these tests. But at least they made informed decisions.

When it comes to colorectal cancer, screening can find a cancer before it has chance to get bigger or spread. This makes treatment more successful and your chances at a long, healthy life, despite a cancer diagnosis more likely. Today more than a million people in the United States are survivors.

To your good health,
