November was American Diabetes Month, an occasion to

A new study finds that women who drink fructose-rich beverages
(sweetened soda or juices) are at increased risk for gout,
a condition that has the distinction of being known throughout
history.
Today we know that gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis
that in the U.S. has gone from 16 cases per 100,000 in 1977
to 42 per cases 100,000 in 1996. This time period also saw
a huge rise in soda and fructose consumption. It now appears
that fructose rich beverages can cause a buildup of uric
acid in the blood and this leads to gout.

affect against lung cancer in women smokers, though not in nonsmokers. The
work also found that drinking black tea protects against the disease in those
