Daily Low Dose Aspirin Linked To Drop In Cancer Risk...

Dear Reader,

Aspirin, the good old standby that's been in your medicine cabinet forever, appears to have a knack for prevention. We know the powerful little pill can help prevent a heart attack or stroke in those who've never had one. A new investigation published in the online edition of The Lancet finds that a daily low dose of aspirin cuts the risk of dying from a wide number of cancers. A rather significant finding to be sure.

The British research team has found evidence that low dose aspirin (75 milligrams) taken each day for at least 5 years brings a 10 to 60% drop in fatalities depending on the type of cancer. This fresh work is an analysis of eight studies involving over 25,500 patients that was originally conducted to examine the protective potential of a low dose aspirin regimen on heart disease. It's the largest study to find that those who take aspirin for a long time have a reduced risk of death from many types of cancer.

The same research team reported in October 2010 that a long-term regimen of low dose aspirin appears to cut the risk of dying of colorectal cancer by a full third.

The latest results do not mean that every adult should start taking a daily dose of aspirin according to Prof. Peter Rothwell from John Radcliffe Hospital and the University of Oxford. Aspirin does carry the risk of side effects like bleeding and stroke, so it's not right for everyone.

These findings demonstrate major new benefits that haven't been factored into current recommendations because of those risks. The benefits are now clearly in the lead due to the reductions in deaths from several common cancers.

The research for the current review ran for between four to eight years, while the subjects were tracked for up to twenty years. While the studies were going on, overall cancer death risk went down by 21% among those taking low dose aspirin, but the long term benefits of some specific cancers started to show up five years after the studies ended.

At five years out, death from gastrointestinal cancers had dropped by 54% among those taking low dose aspirin. The protective impact of aspirin on stomach and colorectal cancer wasn't seen until ten years out, for prostate cancer the benefits appeared 15 years later.

Daily Low Dose Aspirin Linked To Drop In Cancer Risk... Continued...

Two decades after starting that low dose aspirin program, death risk fell by 10% among prostate cancer patients; 30% among lung cancer patients (in cancers called adenocarcinomas, the type seen in nonsmokers); 40% among colorectal cancer patients and a whopping 60% among esophageal cancer patients. Other types of cancer were a bit tougher to gauge.

Higher doses of aspirin didn't boost the protective benefit. The results held for both genders and whether the patient was a smoker or not. Age did have an impact; the 20-year risk of death went down most dramatically in older patients.

Naturally more research is needed to build on these findings, the study authors suggest that anyone who wants to start a long term low dose aspirin therapy, consider doing so in your late 40s or 50s to benefit most from the cancer protective benefits. Of course you shouldn't start aspirin therapy without talking to your doctor first.

If you're already taking low dose aspirin, you now have another benefit in terms of death risk from many cancers. Not a bad benefit!

To your good health,
