Are You Suffering From Weight Misperception...

Dear Reader,

There are some very real dangers for women who are overweight but consider themselves to be at a normal weight according to new research appearing in the December 2010 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Nearly one in four overweight women sees her weight as normal, which means she's making no changes to what she eats or how active she is.

Interesting that the study also found that 16% of the so-called normal weight women also had weight misperceptions, seeing themselves as heavy.

The misperception of body weight is nothing new. What this study adds to the knowledge base is whether body weight misperceptions influence health behavior.

The team looked at height and weight information from the medical records of 2,224 women aged 18 to 25 years old. The women answered questions about healthy weight related practices in the month before - things like eating less, eating differently or exercising. They also talked about unhealthy behaviors like using diet pills, diuretics, vomiting, laxatives, smoking or skipping meals.

The subjects provided information about their education, ethnicity, marital status, household income, employment and how much they used the Internet.

The participants were then divided into four categories...

- Overweight women who thought they were normal or underweight

- Overweight women who knew they were overweight

- Normal-weight women who thought they were overweight

- Normal-weight women who thought they were normal or underweight

In all, 1,162 women were considered overweight using the accepted BMI standards; of these subjects 895 saw themselves as overweight, 267 did not. The other 1,062 normal weight subjects had 892 seeing themselves as normal or underweight, while 170 thought they were overweight.

There were ethnic differences - African American women were more likely to underestimate their BMI, white and Hispanic women were more likely to overestimate it.

Overweight subjects who were college educated and identified as internet users were less likely than other subjects to misperceive their own body weight.

For the overweight woman, her misperception is likely to keep her from eating a healthy diet, cutting back on her intake of sweets and junk food or getting more active, all important things to help your body stay healthy. Normal weights also engaged in unhealthy behaviors like smoking or using diet aids to stay slim.

The one bit of good news. Among women who knew they were overweight, 35.9% reported eating differently, or less, in the thirty days before the study in an attempt to lose those extra pounds.

Our society has become accustomed to seeing heavier people. There are plus size models and lines of clothing. Portion sizes are huge. Accommodations are made for obese people.
