Eating This Could Reduce Risk of Eye Disease...

Dear Reader,

A new analysis shows that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids seems to protect against the onset of age related macular degeneration... AMD for short. Study lead author Sheila K. West of the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine says that the findings corroborate earlier research that including omega-3 rich food in your diet might just protect against advanced AMD. In the United States, AMD is the major cause of blindness in whites and is a leading cause of loss of vision in American's over 60 years old.

AMD gradually destroys sharp, central vision, what you need for seeing things clearly and performing common tasks like reading, driving, cooking and so on. AMD, totally painless and sometimes slow to progress, impacts the macula, the part of the eye that lets you see detail.

What West and her team did is take a fresh look at a one-year dietary survey that was conducted in the early 1990s. High concentrations of omega-3s have been found in the retina, and evidence seems to be growing that ingesting the nutrient is an important part of eye health. The respondents were 2,400 seniors between the ages of 65-84 who lived in Maryland's Eastern Shore area, a place where most people eat fish and shellfish very regularly.

The American Heart Association recommends that adults eat fish at least twice a week, but most of us don't eat anywhere near that much.

After food intake was assessed using a validated questionnaire, the subjects underwent eye exams and just shy of 450 had AMD, 227 had early disease, 153 intermediate stage and 68 of had advanced disease.

Participants in all groups, including the controls, ate at least one serving of fish or shellfish each week, while those with advanced disease were found to eat less fish, shellfish and seafood per week. The observations appear in the December 2010 issue of Ophthalmology.

As you've heard, omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids because they're needed to keep your body healthy, but your body doesn't produce them, you have to get them by eating foods. One of the best sources can be found in fish like salmon, tuna and halibut, seafood like algae and krill, some plants and nut oils. You may have also heard them called polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs).

Eating This Could Reduce Risk of Eye Disease... Continued...

Earlier evidence has suggested that dietary zinc is also helpful when it comes to AMD, so the team checked to see if zinc consumption (from a diet of oysters and crabs) cut the risk of AMD. No association was seen between zinc and this eye disease. The researchers theorize that the low dietary zinc levels relative to zinc supplements could be the reason behind the link.

Interesting that the photoreceptors of the eye have a very high concentration of a specific type of fatty acids and lipids compared to other cell types. It makes sense that eating lots of omega-3s would be helpful according to Anand Swaroop of the U.S. National Eye Institute. He suggests that larger studies with long-term follow up are needed before any expert will say for sure that omega-3s are of value.

A natural way to get the benefits of omega-3s, whatever research proves them to be, is to consider adopting the Mediterranean diet, which offers a healthy balance of omega-3 fatty acids and other good for you foods. Even if you can't make this change all at once, choose more omega-3 rich foods and you might be surprised at how good tasting they are.

To your good health,
