Money Worries In Affluent Countries Has Unexpected Side Effect...
Dear Reader,
An Oxford University study finds that people in wealthy countries with free market economies are more likely to become obese.
Financial stress, insecurity and increased competition in nations like the U.S. and U.K. might be the reason behind those higher obesity levels when compared with nations like Sweden. The new work appears in the journal Economic and Human Biology.
The Oxford team set out to see why Americans and Britons are heavier than people in Norway and Sweden. Considering the research into animal behavior that finds animals (in captivity or out in the wild) increase their food intake when faced with uncertainty, the team wondered if stress could be a reason why so many people in these nations overeat.
So the researchers analyzed data on obesity using 96 national surveys on body weight conducted in 11 affluent nations during the years 1994 to 2004. They looked at liberal market countries like the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia and compared them to affluent countries that traditionally offer stronger social programs and higher levels of economic security such as Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway and Sweden.
The study found that more market liberal nations had higher levels of obesity - one third more on average - and higher rates of obesity growth. This holds even when compared to other affluent nations with similar incomes. Not surprisingly, the United States had the highest levels of obesity (around 30% being obese) while Italy had the lowest prevalence (17%).
The researchers believe that their findings show that obesity has social causes.
In the past, the rise of obesity in affluent nations has been attributed to readily available affordable, high energy, preprocessed foods in both fast food places and supermarkets. Researchers know this as the "fast food shock", though the Oxford researchers found that the availability of fast food may not be as big a factor as once thought. It may well be that the effects of economic insecurity are far more powerful.
So urging people to take care of themselves... to eat less and exercise more... may not be the most effective way to address the obesity epidemic. It certainly has done little to stem the tide thus far.

Money Worries In Affluent Countries Has Unexpected Side Effect... Continued...
Interesting to note that the onset and increase of obesity began in the 1980s,
coinciding with the rise of market liberalism in English speaking countries.
This type of economic climate has created more competition and inequality in
some societies... in the workplace and in what we have to possess.
This state of affairs appears to undermine personal stability and security, and
much as animals in the wild, may compel us to eat more in an unconscious effort
to prepare for hard times ahead. The price for these open and flexible markets
may well come in the form of costs to personal and public health.
American society in particular is characterized by environments that promote
increased food intake, non healthy foods and being inactive. Doubt this? Consider
the portion sizes in restaurants, the glut of fast food places in your town,
and the many activities we all pursue that involve sitting.
We all know that being obese (a BMI over 30) ups your risk for diabetes, heart
disease, stroke, arthritis and even some forms of cancer.
Losing as little as 5 to 10% of your body weight can hold off, or even prevent,
some of these problems. But you need to get started, and get started today.
To your good health,
