Is Your Diet Good For Your Skin..?

Dear Reader,

We typically think about diet in terms of our bodies... weight lost and muscles toned, but very rarely do we think about what we're eating in terms of what it might be doing for our complexion.

In fact, the wrinkle fighting antioxidants in fruits and veggies and the hydrating, healthy fats in fish and other foods may matter to your skin almost as much as to your bathroom scales. And since our skin is the largest organ in the body, with a crucial role to play, it might make sense to pay some attention to what it needs.

Here's some surprising skin-sense on some of the most popular eating plans... you've no doubt heard of all (or most) of them, but do you know what they do for your skin?

Mediterranean Diet: is chock full of fish, leafy greens, olive oil and fruit, making this a heart healthy, waist slimming way to nourish the body. But the benefits don't stop there, eating this way can also protect against melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer) according to a recent Italian study.

What's more, the omega-3 fatty acids in fish help skin cell membranes stay strong and elastic. The antioxidants in those leafy greens and olive oil may offer protection against UV rays and other environmental assaults that work to break down both collagen and elastin, the compounds that keep skin plump and smooth.

Another component of this eating plan, red wine is loaded with resveratrol, an antioxidant that's super good for your skin. Of course you need to enjoy alcohol in moderation, overdoing can leave skin dry and generate free radicals that break down collagen.

Vegetarian/Vegan: calls for saying "no" to meat and other animal products, for health or other reasons. This means that you're eating more fresh produce and whole grains, both fantastic sources of nutrients for the skin. Antioxidants in these foods neutralize free radicals that contribute to brown spots, wrinkles and other signs of aging.

According to Nicholas Perricone, M.D. and author of Forever Young: The Science of Nutrigenomics for Glowing, Wrinkle-Free Skin and Radiant Health at Every Age, plant based foods contain zinc that's great for battling acne and inflammation, while other foods, like dairy contribute to acne. If breakouts are your problem, think about other protein sources and see how your skin reacts.

And since this way of eating can be low in fat, be sure to ad some good fat sources, ground flaxseeds and olive and safflower oils. These help your skin retain water, so its more supple.

High protein/low carb: plans like the South Beach Diet and Atkins fall into this group. The good news is that cutting back on the bad stuff (white bread, pasta, refined sugar) can also lower the secretion of the stress hormone cortisol. This will minimize breakouts according to dermatologist Francesca Fusco, M.D.

Consider a plan that substitutes whole grains, fresh produce and lean meats (fish and other lean proteins) to bring you the blemish busting power or zinc, as well as collagen building proteins. And watch out for more meat heavy high protein plans because eating too much animal fat can increase production of free radicals.

If you eat this way, be sure you take in enough water during the day to keep your skin hydrated.

Low Fat: calls for, you guessed it, cutting down on fat. Plans such as Eat More Weigh Less reduce saturated fat (red meats, whole milk) and are good for both your heart and your waistline. Reducing the amount of animal fat you take in cuts the production of free radicals that age skin according to New York aesthetic dermatologist Lisa Airan, M.D.

Is Your Diet Good For Your Skin..? Continued...

The thing is, your skin does need some fat, like the good kind you find in nuts and olive oil. Fat does help the body absorb antioxidants and fat-soluble vitamins, and does make cell membranes stronger. This can give you a dewier, more supple complexion.

You'll want to try for at least 20% of your calories from fat, especially unsaturated fats. Sauté vegetables in olive oil, add nuts to salads or cereals, and give omega-3 rich salmon, flaxseeds or fortified eggs a try. The linolenic acid in vegetable oils is important in building the skin barrier.

Raw: like the Raw Food Life Force Energy diet, is based mainly on fresh produce, nuts and sprouted beans and grains, that are not cooked so they retain their natural enzymes, aid digestion while also giving you energy and helping you lose weight. Though most doctors have yet to jump on the raw bandwagon, there's no denying the benefit eating this way brings to your skin.

When you eat little meat, it is a challenge to get enough of the building blocks of collagen, but the healthy oils in nuts, avocadoes and olive oil do keep skin cell membranes strong and flexible.

To help collagen, add some sprouted beans, sushi, soy or other raw proteins into your diet, and be sure to add healthy fat sources like almonds, flaxseeds and olive oil to firm those skin cells.

To your good health,
