Surprisingly Effective Cancer Prevention Strategy...
Dear Reader,
This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) is paying special attention to how being active can help reduce two very dangerous cancers, breast and colon cancer. According to UN health agency data, some 460,000 women died from breast cancer in 2008, and about 610,000 patients died of colorectal cancers. Deaths from all forms of cancer are projected to go up - to perhaps as high as 11 million by the year 2030.
If it were up to the World Health Organization all of us would be doing at least 150 minutes of "moderate" exercise each week to cut the risk of breast and colon cancer according to recommendations released to mark World Cancer Day.
Each year on the 4th of February, the International Union Against Cancer uses this day to bring attention to ways to ease the terrible burden of cancer around the world. Preventing cancer, and improving the quality of life for cancer patients are recurring themes. Anyone who has ever had cancer as part of their life, as a patient or a friend/family member of one, can agree this is not an experience they wanted or enjoyed.
And yet cancer is preventable points out Eduardo Cazap, president of the Union for International Cancer Control, an organization that worked with the WHO on the latest set of recommendations. In fact, as many as 30% of cancer deaths don't have to happen at all... if only we'd change (or avoid altogether) some key risk factors...
- Tobacco use
- Being overweight/obese
- Not enough fruits/veggies
- Being inactive
- Alcohol use
- Sexually transmitted HPV infection
- Urban air pollution
- Indoor smoke from household use of solid fuels
Cazap wants people to realize the risks... one in two of us are likely to have a cancer in our lifetime, and the risks only go up as we age. That's troubling... but there is something you can do. Learning more about the causes of cancer, and using evidence-based strategies for prevention are your best bets to stay cancer free. Early detection and careful management of the disease are also important, and most certainly do save lives.

Surprisingly Effective Cancer Prevention Strategy... Continued...
The WHO report, "Global Recommendations on Physical Activity for Health" offer
activity guidelines for three age groups, 5-17 year olds, 18-64 year olds and
those over 65 years. The activities suggested for adults (anyone over 18) are
things like walking, gardening, hiking, swimming, dancing, activity on the job,
housework, play or participation in sports or any planned exercise.
Experts estimate that around 25% of both breast and colon cancers could be prevented
by doing more of these kinds of activities. Being active may even impact other
types of cancer as well.
The amount of exercise needed, 150 minutes of moderately intense aerobic activity
a week for adults, can be reached if you workout 30 minutes a day on five days
each week. Your ultimate goal is 300 minutes of moderate activity per week. If
you up the impact and do vigorous intensity aerobic activity instead, you can
keep your workout to 75 minutes each week. You can even combine the two Intensity
levels.
Sure exercise is hard to fit into your hectic schedule, but do you have time
for the physical and mental anguish of a cancer diagnosis? What about the time
for cancer treatment and recovery?
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
