Hidden Health Benefit For Milk Drinkers...

Dear Reader,

An ice-cold glass of milk is a favorite of many, and is one of the most popular beverages in the U.S. today. As a long-standing source of nutrition, milk is known to support growth and it's interesting to note that humans are the only species to consume milk after weaning.

Now your favorite beverage may be known for something else... drinking more milk, or eating more of other dairy foods, might help you get rid of extra pounds according to research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The study found that adults who ate (or drank) the highest amount of dairy per day lost about 12 pounds at the six-month point, while those who got the least amount of calcium from dairy lost just 7 pounds after two years.

Higher blood levels of vitamin D were also linked with successful weight loss. The highest amount of dairy was about 12 ounces of milk or 580 milligrams of dairy calcium; the lowest was 150 milligrams (about half a glass of milk).

The work included over 300 overweight men and women between the ages of 40 to 60 years old who followed either a low fat diet, a low carb diet or a Mediterranean style diet. They could find all the foods they needed right at their workplace cafeteria.

The study subjects completed questionnaires about how much dairy (and other foods) they consumed on a regular basis. The foods considered dairy for the study included low and regular fat milk, chocolate milk, yogurt, and both yellow and white hard cheeses. A measurement was also made of subjects' blood levels of vitamin D and their body mass index (BMI).

Overweight subjects had lower levels of vitamin D in their blood when the study started, but the levels went up for those who lost more weight. The higher the blood levels of vitamin D, the bigger the loss of weight.

The researchers, who were led by Danit R. Shahar of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, conclude that both higher calcium intake from dairy and increased blood levels of vitamin D are related to greater diet induced weight loss. Just how that happens is still up for debate. There are several theories, including the possibility that eating more calcium causes you to lose more fat via the stool.

Vitamin D is the nutrient known as the "sunshine" vitamin because the body can make it after being out in natural sunlight for twenty minutes or so. The nutrient is also found naturally in some foods, and added to others. Deficiencies have been linked to many medical problems including heart disease and some forms of cancer.

Low vitamin D levels are also associated with weight gain.

Hidden Health Benefit For Milk Drinkers... Continued...

Bringing those levels up appears more and more like it might be helpful for weight loss according to Vincent Pera, MD, director of the Miriam Hospital Weight Management Program in Rhode Island. He believes that milk is a great source of this vitamin and is also taking the place of other drink choices that might be higher in fat and calories. Milk is also loaded with protein and nine different nutrients so it's a fantastic way to fill in gaps that might be opened when you start cutting calories.

It's important to remember this isn't a cause-and-effect study. It might not be the dairy enhancing the weight loss, but rather what is not being eaten helping with weight loss. For example, if you're drinking more milk, you're not drinking sugar-sweetened drinks. Another possibility? Since vitamin D is made when we're out on the sun, maybe those with higher levels were out more often... perhaps exercising?

While some diet experts aren't sold on the idea of dairy as a weight loss aid, they do think it can be a great tasting, nutritious choice that offers valuable nutrients at a low cost in calories or unwelcome substances like sugar, sodium and bad fats. Also important to know, high levels of dairy have been associated with increased risks for certain cancers. Drink wisely.
