Rates Of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease On Rise...

Dear Reader,

Ever rising obesity rates are bringing yet another unwelcome health issue - according to a new study, rising rates of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, one of the main causes of chronic liver disease, come as a result of all that extra weight. If trends go on as they have been, the prevalence of NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) is projected to rise by 50% by the year 2030, clearly a serious concern for the medical community and the rest of us.

And if the United States is anything to go by, as it has been for the obesity epidemic, cases of NAFLD will spread worldwide. This disease comes from the accumulation of fats in the livers of those who don't drink excessive amounts of alcohol, and for most people causes no symptoms, though for others the fat buildup can cause inflammation and scarring of this vital organ.

The liver is not only the largest of our internal organs, but it is responsible for an astonishing 500 body functions and when damaged, is likely to impact nearly all body systems.

Non alcoholic fatty liver disease is not only tied to obesity, but conditions like insulin resistance, diabetes, hypertension and elevated blood fats as well.

NAFLD has the unfortunate distinction of being the most common liver condition in the Western world, and a major contributor to chronic disease of the liver. The thing that concerns the medical community is that NAFLD has a nasty habit of progressing to more advanced disease.

The study on NAFLD was just presented at the International Liver Congress in Germany, and involved a team looking at data from three different nationwide surveys in the U.S. that included responses from 39,500 adult participants.

During the study period, the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease went from 5.51 to 11%. During the early period of the study, 1988-1994, 46.8% of all chronic liver disease could be brought on by non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. By 2005-2008 the number had jumped to 75.1%. The prevalence for the two major risk factors for this condition (diabetes and obesity) also rose steadily during these years.

Rates Of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease On Rise... Continued...

One of the key things you can do to help yourself avoid this condition if you're overweight is to lose that extra weight. Cut the calories you take in, and get more active - this is the time tested, doctor recommended way to drop those pounds. Expect a loss of 1 to 2 pounds per week.

A natural outcome of any weight loss efforts will be to eat a more healthy diet full of fruits and veggies, with far less saturated fat than the average person consumes. Choose instead healthy unsaturated fats, like the kind found in fish, nuts and olive oil, and don't forget the whole grains like whole wheat bread and brown rice.

Exercise will also help and you'll want to plan for at least 30 minutes of moderately intense activity most days of the week. These steps will not only have you living healthier, if you do happen to have conditions like diabetes or high cholesterol, you'll be taking solid steps to manage, and improve your condition.

Another often overlooked way to help you liver is to keep from stressing it - don't drink alcohol to excess. Also, be sure to follow the instructions to the letter on any medication (prescription or over the counter) you are taking so that you don't overtax the detoxification abilities of the liver.

To your good health,
