Significant Pain Relief With This 'New' Treatment...

Dear Reader,

Pain... whether sudden and short lived, or intense and lingering... is the most often cited reason for a visit to the doctor, and one of medicine's biggest challenges. Pain can be a symptom of many medical problems, or can arise on its own without any detectable reason.

Keeping patients comfortable, especially when they're coping with chronic pain improves not only their quality of life, but also their ability to function day to day.

Now there may be a new weapon in the arsenal against pain - meditation - that can sharply reduce your sensitivity to pain according to some new research.

A total of 15 men and women were studied both before and after four 20-minute training sessions on meditation. Before the training the subjects were mildly burned on the calf, after the training sessions they were burned again, but reported 57% less unpleasantness and 49% less intensity. Pretty substantial numbers, don't you think?

According to lead study author Fadel Zeidan, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, the reduction in pain ratings was pretty dramatic. It was far greater than reactions in similar studies that involved placebo, hypnosis and even painkillers like morphine.

Earlier work has found that mindfulness meditation can help patients manage pain, anxiety and other physical issues or mental health problems. The thing is, learning the technique usually takes quite a while. The meditation training in the study was far shorter, just 80 minutes.

MRI brain scans taken during the pain experiments revealed that this meditation technique caused a number of changes in how the brain responded to pain. The form of meditation practiced in the study is known as shamatha, or focused attention. It allows you to learn to observe what's happening in your mind and body without judgment, while staying focused on breathing or a mantra that you chant to yourself.

Significant Pain Relief With This 'New' Treatment... Continued...

The somatosensory cortex of the brain contains a sort of map of the body. Before the training, the area that matches up with the right calf was very active when heat was applied. There was little activity in this area when the subjects meditated while the heat was applied. This suggests the meditation reduces pain by reducing the actual sensation itself.

Parts of the brain that maintain focus and process emotions also appear more active during meditation. The activity was highest in the subjects who reported the greatest decreases in pain levels according to the researchers.

As a completely natural, side effect free treatment, mindfulness meditation calls for you to sit quietly for 15 to 20 minutes. You need no special equipment to do this, just the ability sit comfortably and breath deeply.

The important question is whether meditation might have the same affect on real pain as it did on the lab-produced kind. Pain, especially when it's chronic, is a much tougher issue in the real world... impacting every waking moment and can come alone or with depression, trauma and other physical and/or mental issues.

To your good health,
