Revealed: Caffeine's Benefits To Health...
Dear Reader,
Everyone has lots to say about caffeine... and not much of it is good, until now. A new study suggests that antioxidants, particularly abundant in caffeine, may well have a rather positive impact on your health.
So not only will that cup of coffee wake you up, it may well offer some protection against damaging free radicals as well. And while antioxidants, our free radical defenders, are in a lot of foods, we don't eat as much of these as we might need... while coffee consumption is widespread and showing no signs of slowing.
Science knows that free radicals are destructive little atoms or molecules that attack healthy cells, doing damage that can bring on diseases of the heart or brain (Alzheimer's) as well as certain cancers. This most recent research focused on explaining the precise chemistry involved in antioxidant rich caffeine molecules finding and destroying free radicals.
The work involved an in depth analysis of five different theories about how caffeine interacted with those nasty free radicals. The team discovered that a mechanism known as the radical adduct formation, or RAF, is the one involved in caffeine's ability to protect against free radical damage. These findings are highly consistent with earlier accepted research.
That's good news considering a whopping 90% of Americans take in caffeine on a daily basis, whether by drinking coffee, (black or green) tea, eating chocolate, drinking soda or energy drinks, taking diet pills or over the counter medications.
Experts consider consuming 200 to 300 milligrams of caffeine a day as a safe amount, so long as you're an adult who's not pregnant, nursing, or has been advised by your doctor to avoid it, moderate intake might confer some health benefits along with an energy boost.

Revealed: Caffeine's Benefits To Health... Continued...
Earlier research has found that small amounts of caffeine increase your mental
response times, as well as help with mood, though some have argued these effects
are more from ending withdrawal symptoms than anything else. We do know that
too much caffeine can make you irritable, cause diarrhea, trigger anxiety and
interfere with sleeping.
To stay healthy and free of disease, experts advise that you continue to seek
out, and enjoy, other rich sources of antioxidants along with the caffeine. Foods
like spinach, kale and carrots are fantastic choices that taste great.
It's also worth mentioning that most of us consider caffeine to be a food rather
than a drug, and this may be a mistake. When you drink it down, it begins to
reach all parts of the body in just five minutes, with peak blood levels at about
30 minutes. By this point your body has given in to the effects, your metabolism
goes up, your breathing rate increases, your brain is stimulated, among other
things. What's more, the amount of coffee needed to get the pick me up effect
varies from person to person, depending on body size and if you've built up a
tolerance.
Still, used in moderation, coffee has been shown, as a result of this work, to
be one of the richest sources of antioxidants in most people's diet. Just be
sure it's not the only one you're taking in.
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
