New Weapon Against Superbugs..?
Dear Reader,
It sounds like something out of a movie plot, but scientists have found that Manuka honey could be a powerful treatment against infections that have become resistant to our cache of antibiotics. Antibiotic resistance is an increasingly common problem - it comes from bacteria being repeatedly exposed to the same medication, or from when bacteria are left in your body because you didn't finish the whole prescription and allowed enough organisms to live and multiply, with the ability to resist the same antibiotic in the future.
This leaves medicine looking for answers, for a way to protect patients from infections and epidemics. And while we've known about the antibacterial properties of honey for hundreds of years, the research on its effectiveness just wasn't available... until now. Presented at the spring 2011 meeting of the Society for General Microbiology, these experiments in the lab found manuka honey can clear out bacteria in festering wounds or on contaminated surfaces in the hospital.
A specially filtered version of this form of honey, with all impurities taken out, is being used today in wound care products the world over.
Professor Cooper used the honey on some very common bacteria - streptococci and pseudomonads - finding that manuka honey appears to keep these bacteria from attaching to tissues. This is a vital step for the beginning of an infection... the organisms need to attach to the surface. By stopping the attachment of bacteria, manuka honey is also able to block the formation of biofilms that protect the invading organism from antibiotics.
The work in the lab also found that honey can make MRSA (Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) more vulnerable to medications like oxacillin. MRSA is caused by a particular strain of staph bacteria that is able to resist the antibiotics doctors use to fight it. Without effective medications, the invading organism wins out.
It appears that honey works by breaking down the defenses that bacteria use against antibiotics, so it offers great potential in treating an especially challenging infection like MRSA. Professor Rose Cooper of the University of Wales Institute Cardiff found a type of honey from bees that are found around manuka trees that grow unchecked in the New Zealand area, was quite effective.

New Weapon Against Superbugs..? Continued...
The research findings suggest a way to make existing antibiotics work better
by using them in combination with manuka honey. The next step will be to look
at this type of honey in combination with antibiotics, and do clinical work on
patients.
One caution... don't try this treatment at home. The honey you'd buy at the market
is not the same as the medical grade honey used in these experiments. So you'd
end up with a sticky, mess that wouldn't be doing you much good. If you do have
a cut or open wound, be sure it keep it clean and covered as much as you can.
Other ways to avoid infections are simple things... wash your hands before meals
and after using the bathroom, and be sure you keep your vaccinations (tetanus
shot for example) up to date.
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
