These Fruit Juices Good For Your Heart...
Dear Reader,
Helping your heart might be as simple as drinking a blended fruit juice made from grape, cranberry and blackcurrant according to new research. A team of French scientists tested polyphenol rich juices on pig arteries and saw that these liquids caused the artery walls to relax. That was in the lab, so no one knows if the findings will translate into real world improvements in health, but the findings are certainly promising.
With red wine, dark chocolate and green tea already identified as rich sources of polyphenols, the researchers wondered if some pure fruit juices and purees could also be a source of those same healthful benefits.
They found the richest sources of polyphenols contained in blackcurrant, blueberries, aronia, cranberry, lingonberry and grapes... all strong, sometimes bitter tasting fruits.
The blends of juice tested in the lab are not like the sugar sweetened, color added products you'll find at your local market. Adding good sources of health boosting polyphenols to your diet will require a few changes... nothing drastic or difficult. Here's what you do...
1) Eat or drink a rich source of polyphenols every few hours so that you can keep your blood levels high enough.
2) Choose unrefined foods and whole grains that are richly, deeply colored, and fruit juices without added sugar or colorings.
3) Try not to choose foods that have been overly sweetened or diluted, that natural bitter, astringent or strong flavor of plant-based foods is what you're after. Pure pomegranate juice, yellow onions, and olive oils are good examples.
4) If you prefer coffee and tea, drink the caffeinated variety as the decaffeination process may take away the beneficial polyphenols as well as the caffeine.
5) When it comes to alcohol, chose red wine and beer over hard liquor or other beverages.
6) Choose dark chocolate and unsweetened cocoa powder, as these are a delicious wealth of polyphenols, though you'll need to enjoy in moderation, as they are also loaded with calories.

7) Shop at the local farmers market, or grow your own veggies,
as plants raised organically or under more natural conditions are much higher
in polyphenols. It may be that a pesticide free growing environment encourages
a stronger antioxidant defense in the plant (and for you when you eat it).
8) Read food/beverage labels and choose items that have polyphenols
listed, Watch for the word "phenol" and "anthocyanin", "flavonoids" or "flavonols".
9) Stay away from foods that are sources of free radicals, including
deep fried items, meats and any refined product. Overly cooked (charred) meat
is also a no-no, as is chemically treated bacon.
10) Manage your stress. Your body will use up its supply of
polyphenols faster when under stress, so be sure to practice those relaxation
techniques.
The results of the research add to standing evidence that fruits and vegetables
bring down heart disease risk. And while research has yet to explain why, experts
know that eating a wide range of fruits and veggies as part of an overall healthy
diet is good for us. Juices offer a handy, tasty way of getting some of those
nutrients.
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
