Shocking: Fat Could Return After Liposuction...

Dear Reader,

How's this for awful news? The fat taken away during liposuction, the well-known body shaping procedure, can return and in a relatively short time according to new research appearing in the journal Obesity. However, the fat doesn't come back in the area you had done, but it will come back in other, just as unsightly places explains Robert H. Eckel, MD, a professor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

According to numbers from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 203,000 liposuctions were performed n 2010, which is a rise of 2% over 2009 rates. The procedure involves inserting thin hollow tubes through incisions in the skin and then sucking out dislodged fat to slim and reshape specific parts of the body.

You're a good candidate for the procedure if you live an overall healthy lifestyle but have some stubborn areas of fat that have not responded to diet and exercise.

For the research, the team evaluated 32 female subjects, average age 40 (the range was 18-50). The average BMI was under 25 (range 22-27), so the subjects were considered to be at a healthy weight. They'd been at this weight for at least three to six months, and none of them had a history of weight loss of over 10% of their body weight. None had undergone liposuction before the study. Of the total, 14 were selected to get liposuction, the remaining 18 acted as a comparison group.

In the liposuction cases, the doctors took out up to 5 liters of fat from up to three places - hips, lower abdomen and thighs. At the six-week point, the percent of body fat in the group that got liposuction had gone down by 2.1%, compared to .28% for the controls.

At six months the difference declined, and by the one-year mark, there was no significant difference in body fat between the group that got liposuction and the controls who did not.

The fat that returned was not just the kind that you find just under the skin, (called subcutaneous), but also the deeper, and more dangerous, visceral fat. This is the type that's linked to heart disease and a host of other health problems.

Shocking: Fat Could Return After Liposuction... Continued...

And even though the fat reappeared in different places, most of the subjects were still satisfied with what they'd gotten from the liposuction procedure.

If you're considering the procedure, Eckel offers this advice, be prepared for your fat to return... it may be in different places, in your waist or above. While no one knows why this might be, it is possible, the team theorize, the brain senses a loss of fat in the body and works to restore it.

Other plastic surgeons, some who have been practicing for as long as 20 years, have not seen the fat return, and would have liked to see photos of the research subjects, to judge just how noticeable this return might be. The number of subjects was small, and this is considered a limitation of the work. Also, since the subjects' average age was 40, experts wonder if some of the changes were age related, not liposuction related.

Experts advise anyone considering liposuction not look upon the procedure as help with weight loss. Nor is it a substitute for living a healthy lifestyle, eating right and exercising regularly. While it's a very gratifying operation for the patient, it should never be a substitute for the basics of keeping your weight under control, but rather a springboard to an overall more healthy way of living.

To your good health,
