This Common Pastime Takes Years Off Your Life...
Dear Reader,
How about this to get you up and moving? The American Cancer Society (ACS) has found that sitting too much will very likely shorten your lifespan.
The stark warning comes from a large study of 123,216 American adults over a respectable 14 years. To this point, very few studies have looked at sitting time and death risk. It appears women who sit for over 6 hours a day were almost 40% more likely to die (men were at 20%) during the study than those who sat for under 3 hours a day.
ACS Epidemiologist Alpha Patel estimates that those who sit too much during the day end up shaving several years off their lives.
When you sit, even though you're awake and able to pay attention, there are harmful effects on the body that come from prolonged inactivity. Muscles go silent, your calorie burning rate drops to about one a minute (1/3 of what it is when you're up walking), enzymes that break down fats and triglycerides fall, insulin effectiveness drops after a single day of sitting which ups your risk of type 2 diabetes, not to mention obesity.
Over the course of a career, these bad effects add up.
While this latest work focused on death as outcome, earlier studies have looked at chronic illnesses like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, depression and obesity. Here too, researchers saw that longer periods of time seated increased the risk.
Earlier in 2011, the American Journal of Epidemiology published research that found those who work at a sedentary job have just about two times the risk of a specific form of colon cancer.
The worrisome thing is that sitting appears to be so bad for you. Just like smoking is bad for you. Like overindulging in alcohol or greasy fried food is bad for you. What's worse is that even though we've been told that watching our diets and getting enough aerobic exercise will offset the damage, research is now finding this is just not so.

And though government guidelines are all about being more active, none of them
warn us about the dangers of being seated for a long time, as so many of us are
today.
Even if you try to counter the harm with exercise, that doesn't have much of
an impact - whether you're as thin as a pin or morbidly obese, excessive sitting
is a bad thing to do. The researchers are calling for public health efforts that
focus on both physical activity and inactivity.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration suggests that workers mix non-computer
tasks with time spent sitting at the keyboard. This way you move about and use
different muscle groups.
More of us are adapting our work environment to meet the needs of the body. Today
there are standing and adjustable desktops so you can switch between sitting
and standing. Treadmill desks make it possible to work and walk at the same time.
Why should companies make such changes? Lots of good reasons. Healthy employees
are more productive and will want to stay with such a progressive, caring company.
They tend to be healthier too, so management deals with fewer sick days, less
work interruption. A win, win situation all round.
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
