What Really Helps You Stay Young...

Dear Reader,

We've all seen the movies where the main character gets the chance to return to an earlier point in their lives... to be young again. As you'd expect, things don't turn out as the hero/heroine expects... but wouldn't it be fabulous if we could feel that way again?

It was great to be full of energy and vigor... with a humming metabolism and sky's the limit optimism. According to the author of Creating Your Best Life Caroline Adams Miller, we can rediscover this amazing feeling, and more importantly, hang onto these qualities to lead a more healthy, happy life.

Here are 7 simple ways to turn back the clock...

1. Go to bed earlier as getting the right amount of sleep is the simplest, most natural way to feel younger right away. Restoration only happens when you're sleeping, so getting the rest you need is important for keeping your body and brain vibrant and healthy. Try to erase your sleep debt by getting eight hours a night for six weeks in a row. You'll see the difference in your energy level and the lack of those awful, aging dark circles.

2. Eat revitalizing foods like the healthy stuff, and be sure you eat a fruit or veggie at the start of your meal; to be sure you get it in. Getting enough beneficial vitamins and all-powerful antioxidants is so important, especially as you get older. And so long as 80% of your food choices are healthy ones you can indulge yourself every once in a while. Be sure you really enjoy those occasional treats... just as you did when you were young.

3. Strength training can help you feel years younger, and when done the right way, weight training causes microtears in muscles and this causes the body to create thicker, stronger muscle fibers. This leaves you less vulnerable to injuries, and builds stamina to boot. Focus on your lower body and core first. However, remember to consult your doctor or other health professional if you've not been active in a while to ensure strength training is suitable for you.

4. Give in to your vanity and allow yourself to cover those gray hairs or pamper yourself with good quality skin care products. You don't have to go crazy to try and look younger, but you can do lots to help yourself fight the ravages of time. So go to the salon... buy some new clothes... do whatever you can to make yourself feel attractive and put together.

What Really Helps You Stay Young... Continued...

5. Mix things up as the brain craves novelty, and you have to stimulate it with new things... new associations... new routines. Just make small, out of the ordinary changes like stopping at a different place for coffee, choosing a new route for your run, or trying a new activity to shake things up.

6. Remember the music, movies and more you loved in your youth, as this has been shown in a Harvard University study that doing so brings marked improvement in memory, vision, overall health and happiness. This hints that our mindset can have such an impact on how we feel. So do something that really takes you back... and see how young you feel.

7. Focus on the positive... though it might be harder than it was when you were younger, keep your attention on what's going well in your life... all you have to be grateful for. Cultivating a sense of optimism will give you more positive energy.

By trying these simple techniques you'll be able to keep the years at bay, looking and feeling younger than you are.

To your good health,
