The Truth Behind the 'Apple a Day' Saying...
Dear Reader,
Yet another bit of mother's wisdom proving its worth. Dutch researchers report that fruits (and veggies) with white edible parts might bring down the risk of stroke more than other types of these foods.
In fact, every 25 grams a day of white fruits led to a 9% drop in the risk of stroke, pears and apples being the most often eaten white fruit according to the work that appears in a recent issue of the journal Stroke.
While there has been previous research looking at fruit/veggie intake and risk of stroke, none of those studies examined specific foods to see if some were more beneficial than others.
The study, a project by Linda M. Oude Greip, a postdoctoral fellow at Wageningen University, included data collected by the Monitoring Project on Risk Factors and Chronic Diseases in the Netherlands (MORGEN), a population based study with over 20,000 male and female subjects between the ages of 20 and 65, who had no sign of heart disease at the start of the research.
All the participants filled out a validated 178-item food frequency questionnaire so fruit/veggie intake was available, and the data also included 10 years worth of follow up information on the subjects' health. During the follow up, 233 of the subjects had a stroke.
To conduct the study, fruits and veggies were broken into four groups, based on the color of the fleshy part of the food.
The colors were green (i.e. broccoli, kiwi), orange/yellow (i.e. citrus fruits, carrots), red/purple (i.e. cherries, red cabbage) and white (i.e. apples/pears, onions). The only group that showed a statistically significant drop in stroke risk was the white fruit/veggie group.
In fact, the risk of stroke incidence was 52% smaller for those who had a high intake of white fruits/veggies compared to those who didn't eat a lot of these foods. By contrast, green, red/purple and orange/yellow choices weren't related to stroke.
No one is sure what component in the white fruit is helpful in terms of stroke risk, but it may well be the dietary fiber and flavonoids that are a natural part of these foods. Both pears and apples have high levels of a particular flavonoid known as quercetin.

The Truth Behind the 'Apple a Day' Saying... Continued...
Many experts believe that it's most likely all the good components of these foods,
working tougher on body systems, are beneficial, and it may be impossible to
single out one nutrient over the others.
The nice thing about apples and pears in particular, is that they are available
year round, without dip in quality or a worry about season. They're readily portable
too. In the study, both white fruits were by far the most popular choice.
This is not to say that you should stop eating all kinds of fruits and veggies
in favor of white ones. The findings of the most recent work need to be duplicated
by more research, and other colored fruits/veggies may well offer protection
against different chronic conditions. It's still so important to fill your plate
with a rainbow of fruits and veggies for good health.
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
