Maintaining Weight Loss May Not Be About Willpower Afterall...

Dear Reader,

You've lost those extra pounds... only to find that having reached your goal, keeping that weight off is so much harder than losing it was. Evidence shows that most people regain lost weight within five years.

A new, very important bit of research appearing in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that it's not lack of willpower that makes maintaining weight loss so hard; but a persistent biological urge to eat.

Eating is, after all, one of our most basic, most primal of instincts.

The research involved 50 overweight or obese subjects who followed a low calorie diet for 10 weeks. The team wanted to see what would happen to those who lost at least 10% of their body weight - only 34 of the subjects ended up losing this much.

The study participants consumed 500-550 calories per day, using a meal replacement known as Optifast plus veggies for 8 weeks. For the last two weeks of the program they were gradually reintroduced to regular food.

The researchers measured the levels of 9 hormones involved in appetite control before the start of the diet, when the subjects finished the diet and 62 weeks after the research was complete.

The subjects who finished the study gained an average of 12 pounds back during the following year, though even with that, they were still thinner than when the study began.

Even up to a year after the weight loss, the team found that 6 of the appetite hormones were still out of whack in a way that would cause the subjects to feel hungry. There were higher levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin, as well as reductions in leptin, both of which favor weight gain.

There may be some interesting evolutionary theory at work here, changes in these hormones are supposed to prevent starvation during times when food is scarce. Of course, in our modern world where food is abundant and we're not nearly as active as we should be, the high rates of relapse after a weight loss aren't very surprising according to the study authors from the University of Melbourne.

This might well be why so many of the public health measures that have been adopted in an attempt to address obesity have been a failure. Medications might help combat some hormone changes, but until doctors have appetite suppressants that are safe to use over the long term you won't be finding any help here.

Here are some better ways to keep your weight under control...

Maintaining Weight Loss May Not Be About Willpower Afterall... Continued...

- Weigh yourself regularly, at the same time of day, wearing the same clothing (or nothing)

- Eat breakfast every day

- Exercise at least one hour per day, most days of the week

- Eat a low fat diet with lots of fruits, veggies and whole grains

The findings of this Australian study point out that preventing weight gain in the first place is always the best course. Prevention of obesity is far more effective then trying to fight it once it arrives in your life.

To your good health,
