UK Study Reveals OTC Pain Med Cuts Hereditary Cancer Risk...

Dear Reader,

According to a British study, the first randomized, controlled trial into the effect of aspirin on cancer, taking 2 aspirin each day for 2 years cuts the long term risk of bowel cancer by 60% in those who have a family history of the disease.

Recently there's been intense debate about taking aspirin every day as it increases the risk of stomach ulcers and internal bleeding, but is also known to provide protection against heart problems. Earlier work in this area has been less robust.

The latest study examined 861 people with a condition known as Lynch syndrome, genetics that predispose them to a variety of different cancers. The condition affects one in every one thousand people, and almost half develop cancer, mostly in the womb or bowel.

The subjects in the study started a two-year course of either 600 milligrams per day of aspirin or a placebo between the years 1999 and 2005. An analysis in 2007 saw no difference in cancer rates between groups, but the effect turned out to be delayed until 2010 when there was a clear divergence, with 19 new cases of bowel cancer among those on aspirin and 34 in the placebo group.

Among those patients who stayed on the regimen for the whole two years, 60% of the total, the effects were more obvious, and strongly statistically significant - a 63% reduction in bowel cancers. Aspirin may well have a preventative effect on cancer, but this might not show up until years after the fact.

However, the research finds that for every 10,000 cancers prevented, there could be 1,000 ulcers because of the aspirin.

It's also possible that patients can get the protective benefit on a smaller dose than used in the research, avoiding all those troublesome side effects as well. For most people, taking low dose aspirin might prove to be a sensible option. How this works remains unclear, but experts speculate aspirin might impact faulty stem cells before they get a chance to mutate into pre-cancerous cells.

In a commentary in the same issue of the Lancet, Andrew Chan of Harvard Medical and Scott Lippman of the MD Anderson Cancer Center call the findings compelling.

This finding could have implications for more than just those at risk for cancer, though more study is needed to see what the ideal dose might be for different groups.

In the meantime, regular screening, especially for those over 50, is an important tool in terms of preventing cancer of the bowel. Even though you have no symptoms, getting screened helps find polyps and remove them, before they get the chance to become something troublesome. Screening also finds smaller cancers early when they are most successfully treated.

You can also lower your risk of bowel cancer by taking control of the risk factors you can do something about - most notably in this case, what you eat. Diets full of fruits and veggies (5 or more servings/daily), whole grains and with a limited amount of processed foods and red meats are best. Also, avoid excess alcohol intake, no more than 1 drink a day for women, 2 drinks a day for men as this has also been tied to an increased risk of colorectal cancers.

The study appears online in the Lancet, and was funded, in part by aspirin maker Bayer.

To your good health,
