News On Canned Foods And High Levels OF BPA In Urine...
Dear Reader,
No doubt you've heard of it... controversial chemical bisphenol A (BPA) is used in the manufacturing of large numbers of metal food and drink cans, among many other things, and has gotten lots of press over the years.
Now a new study appearing in The Journal of the American Medical Association finds that taking in a 12 ounce serving of canned soup each day for five days in a row brings a more than 1,000% increase of BPA in urine samples.
The study didn't look at how (or if) BPA has an affect on health. A significant point.
As part of the latest research, 75 volunteer subjects ate either a 12-ounce serving of vegetarian soup in a can (Progresso was the brand used) every day for a total of five days, or the same size serving of freshly made vegetarian soup for the same five-day period.
After a two-day wash out the subjects switched groups. Study researcher Jenny L. Carwile of the Harvard School of Public Health said the team saw that after just five days of canned soup intake there was a thousand percent increase in BPA in urine samples taken from the subjects.
The findings of the study likely represent a temporary peak in BPA levels. No one knows how long the peak might last, or what impact it might have on health.
Industry groups like the North American Metal Packaging Alliance suggest that the study findings bring good news - consumers can be sure that BPA is quickly excreted from the body via the urine. The material, they point out, also has its positive side - enabling high temperature sterilization that protects us against food poisoning and other contamination.
The findings of the research into BPA aren't brand specific, and would likely be the same for other canned foods that use the chemical as part of the liner. But soup isn't the only place you'll find this chemical. A study released in late 2011 by the Breast Cancer Fund found BPA was in many of the canned foods we enjoy during the holiday season - gravy, canned corn, green beans, cranberry sauce and more.
There's also earlier work linking BPA to thyroid problems, reproductive abnormalities, heart disease, obesity, even neurological disorders. Experts believe the most vulnerable to any possible effects from PBA would be pregnant women, babies and young children.
Studies in animals have shown BPA associated with a higher risk of both breast and prostate cancers. Because of the concerns, many companies have removed BPA from baby bottles and sippy cups, while also looking for alternatives to the chemical that can be used instead.
While completely eliminating BPA from your life probably isn't possible, there are things you can do to cut your exposure. Try to...

- reduce the canned foods/drinks you consume regularly and opt for fresh or frozen
foods instead
- if possible, rinse the contents of a can well before heating and serving
- don't heat foods in the microwave using the container they come in, but transfer
to a safer glass or ceramic container instead
- store foods in glass/ceramic containers rather than plastic ones
- look for metal water bottles that aren't lined with a plastic coatings
- dispose of plastic containers that are older, split or scratched
