Being Physically Fit Associated With Healthier Brain Aging...

Dear Reader,

Fascinating findings. A physically fit older person shows fewer age-related changes in the brain according to some new research from the University of Arizona.

This adds to the medical belief that regular exercise will preserve important parts of the brain needed for attention and memory. The latest study found a clear relationship between regular exercise and a healthier aging brain.

The aging of the brain is certainly of importance to a rapidly aging population. In the U.S. there are 78 million baby boomers who are turning 60 (at the rate of 8,000/day) so that by 2025 those over 60 will outnumber the young for the first time in history according to United Nations population figures. Today, 2 billion of us are coping with the normal effects of aging on the brain.

The brain is certainly considered a vital organ - responsible for both involuntary life support functions and the essentials of both personality and memory. It has over 100 billion cells, and weights approximately 3 pounds, though weight and volume do go down as we get older - losing from 5%-10% of weight between 20 and 90 years old.

Until very recently the aging of the brain (from simple memory loss all the way to Alzheimer's disease) was attributed by medical science to neuron failure. Now we know, thanks to improved technology, that unless you have a disease that causes loss of nerve cells, you'll have most, if not all of the neurons you had at birth.

The work on brain aging and exercise was presented this year's annual Society for Neuroscience meeting.

Study researchers in this case found that the more physically fit the older person in the study, the fewer age-related changes in the brain could be found. The subjects were 58 men, 65 women who were between 50 and 89 years old who were matched for patterns of neural activation against performance on treadmills.

Research has shown how regular aerobic workouts can help hold off the mild cognitive failings that come with the years. What's more, exercise spurs the growth of new neurons in parts of the brain associated with learning and memory. How physically fit you are might be a pretty major factor in holding off brain aging.

Being Physically Fit Associated With Healthier Brain Aging... Continued...

Understand too that even a healthy brain shrinks with the passage of years, and genes that are tied to brain function become less active. When the sheathing of nerves thins, the electrical signaling that's normal for the major neural circuits goes a bit crazy. A good night's sleep loses the power to restore because the brain wave states are being disrupted.

Despite this, the important thing to take away from this research is that there continues to be reliable evidence of an association between being active regularly and the health of your brain as you get older. It may soon be that physicians to go beyond encouraging patients to be active by pointing out the very real dangers of a sedentary lifestyle to both body and mind.

And a bit of good news. Even if you start being active later in life, you can still help your brain. If your mental capacity has slipped a bit, you can also benefit from getting out and walking, with a caregiver, a few times a week. Aging isn't seen as a one-way street any more, now it's considered a time when changes can, and should, be made.

There really is no reason NOT to get up... get moving.

To your good health,
