Eating Fatty Fish Improves Heart Health and Lowers Stroke Risk...
Dear Reader,
We don't often hear about women and heart health, until this. A younger woman can cut her risk of both heart disease and dangerous stroke by eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids according to Danish researchers. The team saw a positive effect on heart disease and stroke risk even from fairly modest intakes of fish according to lead researcher Marin Strom, PhD of Statens Serum Institut located in Copenhagen Denmark.
A majority of research on omega-3 fatty acids and heart health is focused on men. What work that does include women has overlooked females young enough to still bear children. This latest work was able to take advantage of a large Danish database of health information on pregnant women.
Information on diet for almost 49,000 women In the Danish National Birth Cohort from questionnaires and telephone interviews was linked to data on hospitalization from the Danish National Patients Registry. At the start of the study, the women were about 30 years old, on average.
The research team compared the subject's intake of fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, cod and herring) with their risk of being put in the hospital for heart disease, high blood pressure or stroke over the following 8 years.
Compared to the female subjects who ate the most fish, those who ate little (or none) were just about 50% more likely to be hospitalized for high blood pressure, stroke or heart disease.
Earlier studies have found that those who don't eat fish are also more likely to have other risk factors for both stroke and heart disease, things like being a smoker or living a sedentary lifestyle. Even after accounting for these factors, Strom and her team found that the association between omega-3 fatty acid intake and heart disease or stroke risk remained rather significant. That's hard to ignore.

Eating Fatty Fish Improves Heart Health and Lowers Stroke Risk... Continued...
To naturally add more omega-3 to your diet, you can go beyond fish to choose
foods like flaxseeds, walnuts, beans, winter squash and olive oil. The National
Institutes of Health recommends adults take in at least 2% of their calories
as omega-3s (2 grams for 2,000 calories/day) but others suggest the amount be
doubled to 4% a day.
These fats are thought to bring down inflammation, as well as blood fats (also
known as triglycerides) while also helping with blood clotting and soothing irregular
heart rhythms according to Harvard professor JoAnne Manson, MD, DrPH, who is
also chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Some of the
events that happen in younger women are due to a higher risk of clotting. Though
not involved in the study on heart health and omega-3s, she wonders if other
as yet unidentified factors may also be at work.
This latest bit of research shows an association only, not cause and effect.
Also of note - it might not just be the omega-3s giving the benefit to the body,
fish might also have some other key nutrients, like selenium, that are important.
Natural sources of nutrients are always considered better than supplements, though
if you simply cannot stand a particular food, supplements are truly your only
choice, and in that case, far better than not getting the nutrients at all.
The research findings appear in Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association.
To your good health,
